Can a pyrometer probe be installed in exhaust pipe instead of manifold? (1 Viewer)

Without a turbo you can't melt pistons without smoking badly.
So tune it clean and no need for a pyro.

I forgot to mention that I live at 7,000' elevation, so I am a little concerned about the thinner air and more heat buildup in the cylinder heads though. How much smoke is okay before running too hot without a pyrometer?

At elevation you'll simply hit smoke sooner, it'll be just as good as an indicator. Cylinder head temperature, if you are worried, is better measured seperately as cooling is a big factor. EGT is more about piston temperature.

With no turbo at 7000ft you may not get acceptable power with zero smoke. I'd look into turbocharging.
