When I came home from work today I noticed my Brittany had one eye that looked like he was squinting. I checked it out and it is swollen around his eye. His eye is not red or anything. Earlier today he was playing with my friends lab puppy so maybe he got hit in the eye. Should I put ice on it? I would like to avoid taking him to the vet tommorow morning just to blow $75 and be told not to worry about it or to put ice on it if it is not serious or uncommon. Thanks for any help.

Dogs can sustain injuries that cause swelling.

In the case of an eye however...I would be careful to check for a foreign object in the eye (will usually cause redness, and weeping), and look to see that there is not an abcess around the area of the eye.

If you have any doubts....get him to vet, by the time his eye gets cloudy it can be too late.

Check him over real well!

hey

Watch to see if he/she keeps playing with the eye area - check for any objects. Other than that, my guess is that he/she got swatted, scratched or bumped and caused minor swelling. Take a regular aspirin, mix in food and monitor - probably good to go. Dogs are almost as sensitive as we are sometime - they just don't dwell on it.

There is no redness and I do not see anything in his eye after checking it over real good. His eye is not cloudy at all. It does not seem to bother him as he is not messing with it. He does not seem to like me touching around the swelling though. Other than the swelling he appears to be running around crazy like normal. Can I safely give him an Ibuprofen?

no Iboprbin

NO! It really is bad for dogs.. My wife gave some to one of our dogs and he hemoraged internaly, He did die.

I did not tell her that was wy he died until 5 years later. Very bad seen.

If you have a wife that $75 is history anyway.

I just saw you advitar wife and a kid, kiss it good by.

I'd also like to add, that if he did get swatted by a puppy, his cornea could have been scratched, resulting in a corneal ulcer. This ulcer can get deeper and deeper causing a Descemetocele (Where the cornea get SO thin, that the goo inside the eye actually protrudes out...), or it can get infected, making treatment more prolonged, and again leading to a Descemetocele.

But, like everyone else said, it could just be soft tissue damage around the eye, may heal with no treatment.

If the dog is still squinting today, I'd def. have him checked out at your veterinarian.
Because I am a veterinarian, I can't (legally) really give you treatment advice without actually seeing the dog...so seeing your vet is the only advice I can give. Just wanted to give you the headsup about the possibility of a corneal ulcer.

Thanks for all the help everyone. As of now the swelling has gone done by over 1/2 but it is still kind of worrying me so Im going to take him to the vet this afternoon at 5:00. Hopefully the vet will just tell me its a bruise and there is no other damage. Once again thanks to everyone.

GOOD MAN!

Cares for his pets, owns a Cruiser and an Early Bronco....gotta be a good guy.

Seeing as Bear is now a Vet shouldnt we have a section here dedictated to her helping us with on our pets? :D

BTW- Congratulations Bear!

I managed to skip out of work early and get him to the vet just a little while ago. No damage to his eye was apparent when they did a fluorescent staining on it. Nothing in his eye just swelling. The vet prescribed "Neo/Poly?Bac-HC Ointment" according to the billing. The medication tube says "Vetropolycin HC" and I have to apply it 3 times daily. Swelling should go down in a few days. $115 later but atleast I know nothing is wrong with my dog.

Which vet do you go to Mooker? I just moved over to Mt.P and would like a good one. If you're over in JI, James Island Veterinary Hospital is great.
BTW-did I see your Cruiser with a parking ticket near MUSC the other day. I remember reading you put your hi-lift on your front bumper and this one looked to have it(although it was raining and I passed at 35.)

I go to Shuler Vet hospital on Coleman right across from the Piggly Wiggly. Dr Shuler is a great guy. My Cruiser is a Sage 40th with ARB and OME lift and 33"s. The Hi lift is mounted acrosss the front on mine. I will try to post up a pic of it later. Luckily that was not me with the parking ticket. The one you probably saw was a guy on the board named Trapper's. His is a sage 40th with Slee Rear Tire Carrier, OME, ARB, and 35"s. There are 3 or so lifted 80's in the Charleston area now, mine, Trappers, and another dark green one that is beat up pretty good.

Ha! Shuler's been around for years! My mom's family used to take their dog to Shuler about 40 years ago, but I'm pretty sure the son is operating it now.
Shuler charged me $600 bucks after my dog chomped on some oyster shells and tore up his stomach. $600 for anesthesia, X-ray, and a little squirter thing-a-ma-jig full of Pepto. I wrote the check and they said the dog's fine, but no more oyster shells, and to squirt Pepto in his mouth every 4 hours. All for 6 Franklins?! Dogs are expensive!
Glad it wasn't you in the No Parking zone. The meter maids downtown suck. Travel around in packs they do. Ridiculous.

Yeah the Dr. Shuler now is a young guy prob in his 30's. They are kind of expensive but everything in Mt. Pleasant seems to be. Plus it is only a few min from my house since I moved to Sullivans so the convenience factor helps out too. I agree the meter maids suck. My 80 barely fits in the spot if I am jammed up against the curve. I have gotten tickets because my flares are out beyond the white lines that mark the outside of the spot. I think I saw your 62 today on Coleman. I was driving my red 74 Bronco with white soft top.

Mooker,

A less threatening injury like a cut, puncture, scrape, to an extremity would not have me worried in the least...and can often be treated at home....or just watched.

In your dogs case... his eyesight was potentionally at stake and your decision to have a vet look at him was the prudent thing to do.

I know they're not cheap (vets), but you did the right thing for your pooch.

Yeah Flint thats the way I felt. Anything involving his eyesight is very important. If it was his leg or something then I would have just kept a close eye on him at home. Bear's words of caution really convinced me to go to the vet as quick as possible. This Brittany is the best upland dog I have ever hunted behind so he gets the best of everything. I joke that he eats better than I do.

LOL. Yeah that was most likely me you saw. Not many blue 62s in Chucktown and I live off Coleman. In fact, if you're on Sullivan's, you and I probably live less than 2 miles away from each other. I live right behind Mama Brown's BBQ. Small world. We should grab a beer some time over at Poe's or somethin'. Enjoy your weekend.
BTW-I'm about to give that pet hospital next to Pet Keepers on Coleman a shot. I'll report back if they're any good.
