Hey all - Please excuse if I should be posting in a different part of the forum (if so, lemme know where!)

My Question: I just picked up my first Land Cruiser a few months back (awwwww, isn't it PRECIOUS!!??), and I am looking for somewhere to use it. NOTE: It is still almost entirely stock (no sliders, all-season 31" tires, stock bumpers, no lift, etc.).

Basically, I want to take advantage of my new off-road capable rig, but am not equipped (yet) to go where the REALLY wild things are. Ideas on 4wd-accessible camping (e.g., that I couldn't get to if I were driving a non-LC?)??

I'm in Sacramento; I don't mind driving for an hour or two to get somewhere.

Thanks.

This time of year?

Everything within 2-3 hours is either 1) Mud or 2) Buried in 10 feet of snow.

The best wheeling around right now is toward Death Valley which is more like 6 hours. I get there every winter or early spring and love the place.

There are some mildly entertaining trails in the Mendocino National Forest-slippery and muddy though.

This is a good time of year to do your mods and projects so it's ready for spring.

For an afternoon of entertainment, you can go to Prairie City and mess around there on the rock piles and dirt hills. One tip-some of the water there is deeper than you think, so stay out of it.

I'll be working on my Cruisers after the holidays, come by if you want to hang out and discuss where to go.

Wouldn't ya know it--when I get free time is when I can't use it!!

Oh well.

Do you know if there's a thread with options for when the weather dries up?

Once the weather is dry--Then the areas around the Rubicon trail start to open up.

We run a trip every spring to Wentworth Springs in mid May, and then do Rubicon in June, and often again later in the summer.

I'd recommend you get a bit if lift and some bigger tires and come along at least to Wentworth.

Once it's dry there are dozens of trails in the Sierras, and many are old mining roads and are not too tough. Good trails for a near stock 80 would be Barney Riley or Eagle Lakes. In fact, Eagle Lakes can be run in the winter but don't go alone and make sure you have a winch and a shovel.

Other good and fairly close trails are places like Slick Rock, Deer Valley, or Strawberry Canyon. All have significant elevation though, and will not be usable until late spring. Last year there was so much snow that it didn't really open up until late June. Dusy Ershim did not open until the first week of August.

This time of year, your best bet is a 3-7 day trip into Death Valley.

If you don't H8mud, you could go to Hollister Hills. They've got a campground and some decent wheeling.

Pismo is outside your stated range, but it's never muddy there and your 31s would work great at 15psi. :)

Noted! (And, yeah...Pismo=nono!! :D)

Thanks
