Can anybody recommend a good camping site in the Pisgah nf

Linville Falls is a great campsite area and close to the Falls and Table Rock. Lake James State park is good too, but you'll have to hike a ways to get your stuff to the campsites. I've heard they closed Mortimer, but that's remote. Those are the Northeastern campsites I've stayed at.
The Southwestern ones were all group campsites (Cove Creek and Kuykendall) and all three of those are great, but a little big for just one family.

I know it's not Pisgah, but I'm heading to Mt Mitchell this weekend.
Only nine campsites at the top and they lock up the bottom gate at night which gives you run of the place all the way to the top. Cars are within 100 yards of the campsites. Thin air for us low landers, but that's just an excuse as to why I'm so tired after moving in. Always cool at night for fires. Great hiking trails..

fish hatchery
if you go into the forest right in brevard, go to the fish hatchery parking lot and go to the far left corner as you turn in. trail leads to a bridge across the river and you can go as far back as you want with sites all along the trail. went 2 years ago for labor day, had a blast

I've gotten several recommendations to stay at Davidson River Campground near Brevard. There are a lot of waterfalls in the area to visit and several other things to do and see as well (DuPont Forest, Cradle of Forestry). The only reason we didn't go as planned as they were booked up when we tried to go. You should definitely check it out.
Cove creek is the best camp frond I've been too on the east coast. Private rock slide keeps everyone busy for hours as well as the waterfall on the trail in the camp ground. Out houses are there but no power or showers but a simple $100 camping shower fixes that.

Fantastic. Thanks for all the input. My days of packing in have been severly dampend with the little ones. I am hoping this trip will be first step to getting back in the woods more.

Cruiserfan FJ in Tegacay and LT! are all talking about the same spot and a great one.
Lots to do in that area. Id check out davidson river campground there for the amenities gor the fam. There are several roadside primitives if that is prefered as well.
The art lobe trail and davidson river flow right through camp. Tubing and fishing rentals available.
As david said lots of waterfalls and short hikes in the area, a friend and I crammed 12 or so into a weekend
Right up the road is the looking glass falls, and its roadside so no hike, just a flight of stairs.
if you split left before the falls on NCFS 475 it takes you to the hatchery. Out of the hatchery lots are several trails including the john rock trail. Before the hatchery on the right is the Looking Glass mtn trail, depending on the boys ages it could be a strong/aggressive day hike
across the street is a swimming hole for the return though....a ebb and flow of rope swing status but if its there its usually a good one.
Just past the hatchery 475B splits off to the right. If you stay straight less than a mile up is the cove group camp site Al mentioned. easy to hike in if the gate is blocked if nothing more than the rock slide. If you go right on 475 B there are several primitives and at the top Cove Ck singletrack trail. 8 miles of bliss down to the group campground just metioned. even better if the wife will drive you to the top. If you continue on 475B it returns into 276 (i believe) above the looking glass falls. Right about there is another cradle of forestry area and pink fields. A few miles further and your on the parkway at cold mountain. To the Right pisgah inn for a classy dinner or just a big brunch one morning. who knows you may wanna live the high life and descend into the woods instead

Al and I have posted a bunch of pictures from Pisgah on our facebook pages, but not on here. If I get some time today, I'll post some up here...

From what i've seen staying at the three
Davidson River campground is always extremely busy and crowded but does have running water for showers and toilets.
The Fish Hatchery one is a very good one but amenities are pretty scarce from what I remember of it.
Cove Creek is only two camp sites that are set far enough apart that you will never have to see the other campers. The sites are huge so if you wanted you could do it by yourself or you could invite 150 of you friends. I misspoke when I said private campsite and waterfall .... anyone can hike to them but in the 5 years i've been going i've seen maybe 10 hikers make it to them.
I'll never do another camp ground in that area since going to that one but as I said there are no showers or flushing toilets. If you can't deal with a camping shower and an outhouse then Davidson River is for you.

apparently Davidson Falls is full and is only excepting first come first serve for a couple of sites. So maybe we will check out cove creek. Thanks for all the input. I would love to see some pics if you have them!

We are shooting for Davidson River the weekend of October 5th through 7th. It is first come first serve but with 140 sites, I would hope they wouldn't all be filled. Does anyone know what kind of wheeling can be done in the area? I am looking to get the tires dirty but nothing a newbie can't handle.
There's lots of forest service roads in the area.... Brett, Brian and I found a pretty good one but was very overgrown and a little too narrow for the 80 after about a mile in....... still want to go back with a smaller rig and see where it goes.
Jason Free can probably point you in a better direction off of the parkway..... Also the Oskar Blues brewery in Brevard may be open soon.

The Cruiser, me, the wife, kids, and beagle pups are headed to Pisgah as soon as I can get out of work tomorrow. This will be our first long distance trip in the Land Cruiser. I averaged 15.2 MPG driving to my parents so I hope to better that heading west. Thanks to Jeremy, I fixed my door switch and completely my tailgate/dome light just in time for the trip.
