Hello

My smog pump started to die today, making an awful noise like a chopper (helicopter) thak, thak, thak ...

Is this one CA legal?:

A1 Cardone Air Pump
Part Number: 8056-07049864
Smog Air Pump -- Remanufactured
@ Autozone

Anyone what to do, know the caveats?
Any advice much appreciated!

I don't think CA legality is an issue. A smog tech won't be able to tell, and probably won't care, if it's original or not. It just needs to blow air and fit. Fit is one caveat. I'd compare the bolt and hose pattern of your current pump with the one you're considering buying. Blow air is the other. The wear items are bearings and carbon vanes. As far as I know, the vanes are NLA. If the Cardone pump fits, and comes with a lifetime warranty, you might get lucky, or your could get really good at swapping pumps. Alternatively you could start hoarding used smog pumps and make one good one out of a few bad ones. They're not hard to take apart, just messy.

The picture I found looks like it is the right one. I had an A1 Cardone that lasted about 40K miles before it seized. When I went to replace it, Napa would try to give me a different pump with heater hoses attached instead of the metal inlet and outlet elbows. This pump probably would have worked, but it just looked so goofy. So I went to another store and got another A1 Cardone that was the correct design.

I agree with Seth that the smog tech wants to see a pump, but probably doesn't care what it looks like as long as it is connected correctly.

Smog pump is the same for all 50 States, even those that plan to secede (where do I sign up?) :D.

Though it will cost more, this place will provide a better rebuild: http://www.rebuildingfactory.com/

Most with the A1 Cardone have to replace much sooner than the 40K miles 2mbb got. I suspect the A1 uses Chinese components. The RBF uses Japanese or American bearings. I took my pump to the place and asked them to show me the components they use. They did... Now if those were the bearings and carbons that went in, I don't know. Didn't hang around to watch...

Sweet, I emailed them.

I need my extra pump rebuilt.
