Why not use a motorcycle/ atv airfilter. I'm sure someone makes a size that would work. Obviousally getting it on there would be a challange, but at this point getting anything in there is a chore. Like any atv air filter it could be removed cleaned, reused. water will not have much of an effect as far as degrading the fome ect..
Just my 2 cents. Maby some one has already tried it.

I am looking into that option. The big issue is just not being able to really tell what size is needed. I am sure there are several types of filters that would fit and even fairly easily. It's just not really being able to get a solid measurement of the size that's required. Water would basically be a non issue. That duct is specifically put there to keep moisture away. Otherwise they would have just had another vent over it.

From the dead, id like to see what you guys have found to use as filter media and what the long term affects have been. There seemed to be many interested in this and it petered out.

Uni makes sheets that you can cut to fit, make your own: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000WJJA0U/?tag=ihco-20

How about an offset duct to line up near the right A pillar and run a snorkel with a real cab filter off an excavator on top?

Hi. I've just dismantled my entire dash to clean my truck. I think the PO live on dusty roads and never cleaned her. It was disgusting when I got her.

I need to find a solution.

Will develop something and post here.

For now thinking of doing something to the top of the blower from within the cab to insert a flat filter which could be changed from inside the cab behind the glove box.

Well that sure looks like fun!

I have been riding HD's all my life and can think of a few filters from some older models that may work. I will hit up my parts guy at HD and see what I can come up with.

I've kicked around cutting a slot in the firewall just above the blower intake and fashion a slide in tray type filter from the engine side. You may consider something like that now that you can get the firewall and see where to make a cut. Seems like a slam dunk from my initial look when I had the cowl off. I couldn't see any room under the dash to insert a new filter from the inside. Be simple enough to make a weather tight flap on the engine side too. :)

So I've been running through ideas about this since it first came up. Just as Dissent suggested it mean cutting a slot in the firewall. I was going to make a simple slide/tray that holds the filter and positions it in place. Then just use rivnuts, thumbscrews and an o-ring to seal it in place. But, its been super low on my priority list.

Some pictures I took of the funnel from inside the cab, from through the vent in the hood and on top of the funnel in the hood

Let's crack this once and for all

I figured this out on a 99 4 runner. Something similar should work on the 80’s. Here you go.
1917169

-I removed plastic cowl
-The opening on the drivers side is an exact match shape wise to the section on the passenger side.
-I marked the area in the exact shape and used a uni biand saw to cut the access
-Air intake is oval with 1 flat corner on firewall side.
-I used a piece of aluminum and cut it large enough to cover the hole but small enough to clear wiper motor.
-I cut a square hole the exact dimensions inside the aluminum cover to accommodate a cabin filter for a 2016 - up Jeep Wrangler.
-I used 1” aluminum angle to make a filter rack and used heavy duty silicon the seal everything up.
-I checked clearance occasionally by turning wipers on.
-I temporarily sealed up the access hole with Butyl flashing tape not asphalt based
-I am working on a permanent solution for an access panel but the flashing is working great and is completely covered by the plastic cowl.

As stated above. It requires effort but is definitely not a hard job. This has been worth it due to the decreased dust and increased performance in cooling and defrost. I noticed 0 air flow drop. Let me know if you have any questions. Sorry i didn’t take more pics during project

GUYS GUYS GUYS!!!!!

TWO STAGE SNORKEL

I know this was sort of hinted at before, but I'm post count boosting right now, so bear with me.

Main snorkel comes out of quarter panel. Y-pipe comes down and goes directly in to the cabin air intake.

Just think of it. You'll never have to (or be able to) open your hood again. All maintenance magically disappears. No more oil leaks, coolant checks, trans drain and fill, or regular air filter replacements.
