The FSB's (Full Size Bronco Club)and I are going to run Caballo Peak on Saturday the 17th of March. If anybody is interested post up and we will make a run out of it.
We have all the coordinates but none of us have actually made this run, so if someone has made it and would like to add their insight it would be appreciated.

Sounds like a nice trip. I put it in my calendar. If a full size Bronco can make it, we should be golden!!

Thanks for setting it up.

This trip starts at exit 63 off I-25 south of Truth or Consequences and ends in Williamsburg at a gas staion that actually has free air.

Once on the trail, there are some pretty good obstacles. I would not recommend this trip to groups smaller than 3 or 4 vehicles. It can be done in a stock vehicle but be prepared to pull them over some rocks. There are bypasses for some of the rough stuff but these are not included in the gpx file as we did not spend too much time exploring.

Near the end of the trail you will have to cross the Rio Grande, so know the outflow conditions of Elephant Butte Dam. There may be access to a road further north, but again we did not explore that way.

Go prepared to spend the whole day on the trail. It took us a full eight and a half hours to complete. Take plenty of water and food.

The current plan is to meet at the chevron station at the Williamsburg exit and be ready to roll at 9:00am give or take a 1/2 hour.
I have not yet decided if I am going to spend the night before, the night after, both night, or no nights in the area. I would like to go fishing at the Butte before or after but that would require me to haul the FJ and boat down and sleep in a tent or haul my 5th wheel and the FJ down and fish from the bank, or just haul the FJ down and sleep in a tent, or just drive the FJ down and sleep in a tent, or a motel, or well either way I will be there.

Looks like 3 Broncos, 1 Heep and my FJ so far.
It is the same time as the Bronco Stampede in Arizona so I don't expect any hard core Bronco guy's.

All systems a go......................

Looks like 4 Broncos, 1 CJ7, 1 Chevy Pickup (instead of my FJ40), and 1 80.

If anybody else wants to come your are more than welcome. There is plenty of camping and fishing in the area. I unfortunately will just be down for the day, so we will be leaving Albuquerque about 6:30 on Saturday morning and not getting back until late Saturday night.

Here are a few words from our fearless leader,
oldrojo; said:
It seems March 17th(Saturday) is the only day this month that my wife will give me a "kitchen pass".....since it's only that one day, there won't be enough time for me to go to the "Stampede"......I really want to make that trip sometime, but not this year.

I've talked to Rattlesnake and he said if I'll post it, he "will come". Sooo...

I will lead a scout trip/trail ride to Caballo Peak, Apache Gap, and Palomas Gap on Saturday March 17th. I call it a scout trip because I have never been/seen the actual trail, but I know where it starts and will rely on my sense of direction and sun/moon alignment, Native American heritage and just stumble around the mesa until I find the trail. How hard can it be? :duh
Just kiddin', I'm not Native American, but this trip may take the full day so be prepared for a long day/night drive home.

Let's plan to meet at the Chevron station in Williamsburg NM (South of TorC) AT EXIT #75 at 9:00 AM Saturday March 17th. There is a small city park right there if you have a trailer and tow vehicle and need to park it for the day.
We will drive down the old hiway to Arrey NM where we will cross the Rio Grande and I-25 and proceed to the start of the trail. I plan to be on the trail by 10:00am as again I don't know how long we'll be out there. If my calculations are correct the trail will bring us back to Williamsburg/TorC.
Bring ALL TRAIL EQUIPMENT,LUNCH,SNACKS, AND EXTRA WATER. And have a plan if you have a break-down. We will not leave anyone on the trail but will not tow your vehicle back to Albuquerque.:whiteflag

Again this could be an all-day deal so be prepared.(sunscreen, food, phone, water)

I'm hoping to go camping with Isabelle Friday night and meet up with the group on Sat morning. Let me know if anyone else would like to tag along.

UPDATE....
My son and I are going down Friday morning for fishing and hanging out. We're just going to take a tent and camp on lions beach unless someone has a better plan. My 9 year old daughter is going to let me know if she is going later in the week.

Cool, hope your 9 year old goes so that my 6 year old can have someone to hang out with. I need to find out where lions beach is and will camp there. I've never gone to this lake before!

i really need to fix my truck :crybaby: this is the stuff i bought it for.

Lions Beach is a relatively vague term to describe the beach area north of the main entrance to Elephant Butte.

The best thing to do is call or text me when your close and get directions or meet up and go in together. 227-1535

This is roughly where we will be,
lions beach camp, elephant butte - Google Maps
give or take a few miles depending on wind conditions and star alignment

Sounds like a plan, let us know how its looking for you.

Ok, cool. Will call you to iron things out. I'm thinking we can be ready late morning, is my guess.

I'm shooting for mid morning but I still have a lot to do. Looks like 4 of us and our children are going to be camping.

Our fearless leader "OLDROJO", my buddy Bruce and his youngest son, myself and my son and youngest daughter(yes she has committed to going with us) and Ali and Isabella are all planing on camping.
We have 3 more rigs coming from Albuquerque on Saturday morning for a total of 7. There are 2 guys from El Paso that may be there and at least 1 more guy out of Albuquerque that is committed but we have not heard from him lately. Looks like a good turn out.

We will then be meeting at the Chevron station at exit 75 on I-25 at 9:00am sharp. Anybody else want to come out and play?

Sounds tempting to me. It would nice to get away. The run is on Saturday I assume? I just have to decide cuz I have a friends b-day party on Sat. night.

I won't even try to make it to Chevron at 9 so just send me a text/call when you get to the destination. I'll email you shortly.

What's the plan for radio comm? FRS/CB/HAM/smoke signals?

That is 9:00 am Saturday morning not Friday.

Got your email and will let you no when we leave and then where we're at.

CB is usually the way we go and typically ch 13. Smoke signals work also. Speaking of which we have plenty of room for firewood so don't worry about that.

The primitive camping fee at the lake is $8 and is a self pay unless someone is manning the entrance.

I'm going to be camping with the Boy Scout troop at Bosque del Apache this weekend. I know that's kind of far from where you guys will be but I'd like to know if you'll be on any HAM frequencies. I can attempt to listen in. I'm also going to attempt to hear some of the megalink repeaters that are near there. But, I'm just using my HT with 2 different antennas and neither are great.
