Do a search on eBay for "Garrett Turbo" and you'll get a lot of decent looking used units with no "shaft play" and good bearings for under $100. Is there a specific A/R or model number one should look for when considering a unit for a 3B? Also, some seem to be oil and water cooled...is this desireable? Finally, should I make sure the unit comes with a wastegate or are these readily available afterward?

Thanks

hey Moose, you mind if I piggy back this thread with the same questions about a 2H??? I have an ebay window open right now with used turbos on them and was wondering the same things.

thanks,

David

You want an exhaust ratio of .42 and a compression ratio of .48, apparently this works out just about perfect for the 3B.

Oil and water cooled are VERY important as far as I'm concerned, it means less waiting to cool your turbo down after running it hard (to avoid coking the bearings). Cooler is always better.

Most should come with a wastegate included, but not all are adjustable, make sure you get one that is. I believe the Lebaron / K-Car wastegate is set to 7 lbs, and 9-10 lbs is ideal.

aren't the chrysler turbos garrett T3s? I have heard T3's are a good option for the 3B's. Early saab 900s also came with garrett T3's and are pretty plentiful, at least in the north east. I am not sure about the ratios though.

like Iron giant, i was wondering the same about turbo sizes for the 6cyl diesels, in my case the 1HZ though very similar in size to the 2H. T3's seem a little small, no? what are some other options?

I can't say for sure about the 2H. Ideally someone out htere with a 12H-T will crawl around inside their engine bay and read off the casting stamp with the ratios on it and get back to us.

I do know some guys have used a turbo with a compression ratio of as high as .60 on their 3B's and were generally happy but complained that it took to long to spool up. One that size might work ideally for a 2H, but as I said I can't really say.

I find this helps to find out some ratios, then I use the info it gives me to find a cheaper more available turbo with the same specs;

Also, yes the Chrylser turbos were Garrett T3's.

Craig.

i just dug up some old specs, i used to be/still sorta am a saab guy...

'80s 900 and (9000 too i think) turbos did use the garrett T3's, IIRC they changed to a mitsu turbo in '89-'90. ratios are 0.42 /0.48 and they are Oil cooled. all saabs also came with oil cooler systems that could possibly be retro fitted as well.

my old saab mechanic friend has TONS of used saab parts lying around his shop, i could give him a ring and see what he has and how much he would want to sell them for. It is tough to beat ebay though. if anyone is interested PM me and i can see what i can do. T3 rebuilt kits can usually be found for under $100 and often on ebay as well.
