I am searching for a 4Runner or X-tra cab p/u. I am finding a lot of rebuilt 22RE's. If rebuilt can I expect to get another 200k or more out of it? Im sure that it depends on the mechanic, but who knows what garage is good really.

I would love to have a FJ60 instead but I am wanting EFI and fuel economy. I imagine they are about equal in reliability if all things are equal. I am planning to drive the new rig from SD to northern cal once purchasing it and I imagine the price to drive the 60 vs the 4Runner would be considerable...

Opinions?:hhmm:

In my experience, the general rule is that rebuilt engines will not last as long as a factory fresh engine. I'd say they will last 75% as long. Some of the reasons are that most rebuilders typically use the old crankshaft, rods, head, pistons, etc. Although they've been machined, they still have the stress of the original 200K on them.

Things to look for in a rebuilt 22RE are metal backed timing chain guides, new timing chain and tensioner, new timing chain cover, water pump, oil pump, along with the typical wear and tear items like rings, bearings, seals, etc. A high end rebuild will include a new casting head and new pistons from places like engnbldr.com and a turbo oil pump. There should be no oil or coolant leaks and the rebuilder should have used all new gaskets, not FIPG (although there are a few places on the engine that do need FIPG).

If you want the size of a 60, but want EFI, just get an FJ62 :) or better yet, an FJ80. 80's are so cheap these days.

Largely, I'd say it depends on reputation. I know of a builder that was offered $1,300 for a block he was building for himself and he turned it down.

I know my RTE 4Runner had a brand new Jasper in it when I bought it... And it had a rod hanging out of the block...

I also know MOST guys that rebuild these things think they're Chebby 350's and you can just slap them together...

It all depends on who did it and how, and how deep they went...

Personally, I'd like a rebuild for two things and that's seals and new bearings. Then you can run a Syn or blend and make a world of difference in wear.

I also say it's a fat chance any rebuilt 22R will go near as far as a virgin properly PM'd motor... But you also have to think, how old is your truck? Now flip that over and more than likely you'll never see the other end of the truck... I hate to say it but something will prolly come up. Like a wreck, or a move... Or you sell it... ETC.

If you've got the money, and can provide the labor, just read the FSM and get the correct bearings for the journals at the dealer, a GREAT torque wrench, and just rebuild one yourself...

You can even do it in steps, like have the machine shop clean and machine the block and you put it all together... Or just have them clean an hone the bores out and you reassemble it...

Stuff like that.
