Howdy,
I am in the process of buying a 99 100 and wanted to run it buy y'all. I have read much about the exhaust manifold and this afternoon started it cold. I know this has been covered, but I am not to smart. Once I started it, i heard a slight ticking down underneath, maybe by the Cat. Is this the area and am I going to have to replace the EM?
The cruiser has 55600 miles and is in great shape. The price is 22k. I have searched Edmunds and kbb, But I want another opinion or 50. I appreciate in advance any insight/help. It just had a 60k mile tune @55k miles and nothing was mentioned about the exhaust manifold, according to the owner.

Oh yeah and I am buying it tomorrow.
I know I am a noob, be kind!

Not an anwer to your question (my '99 hasn't experienced the manifold cracking...knock on wood!!!)...but 22K seems high on the price meter these days for even one with 56K on the odometer?

No manifold problems on my 99 either, but I agree 22k is top dollar, Ive seen 2001 models in that price range, I wouldnt expect to get any more than 17k or so for mine, and thats with navigation, new revos (tires) and all....

But that is low miles for a 99, and you're getting a good truck for the money anyway. I bought mine with 50k miles 3 years ago and have added another 55k miles with no problems other than starter contacts, and having the 100k belt maintenance done.
enjoy!

Mine is 98 with 120K miles and it seems fine of mine (Knock on wood). I think I will consider the 2000+ for that kind of price range!!!!

Agree with the above. I just bought an '01 with 84K for $21.6, without a manifold leak and in really good shape. $22K is steep for a 99.

At the very least, it may be worth having a mechanic scour the thing and trying to talk the price down using whatever he finds. As I recall, KBB on these was in the $18K range, and I doubt too many dealers/sellers who list at 22 will want to come down that far, regardless.

Good luck!

I just bought an 01 with Nav and all options (LX470) for 23 with 62k on the clock. Your price is too high.

An exhaust leak at the manifold will increase in volume when the engine is loaded. And it will usually persist whether cold or hot, although it may change in character.

You may be hearing something else, if it does not change when engine is loaded vs. idling.

My '99 has a wee bit of valvetrain noise upon startup, but it disappears within a few seconds.

The cold valvetrain noise was very noticeable and would last for up to a minute after startup, when I changed from conventional oil to Mobil 1 5W-30. I changed again to Mobil 1 10W-30 and that mostly alleviated it. Now it is very slight and disappears very quickly.

My '99 has no sign of exhaust leak, at 91k+ miles. (Another "knock on wood" here...)

Thanks for the replies. i found that the cruiser is really a '00. So I made the purchase and it is great. I think the noise I hear could be the Cat. Converter as it expands and contracts...
Thanks again,
shiner
