I am looking to buy a 2000 -2002 100 series for my wife, then me when she tires of it. I expect to find one in my price range with 65 - 85k on the clock.

Equipment:

I want rear lockers, navigation, but don't know enough about the 100 to know what items to look out for.

Maintenance:

I know this has a timing belt, and would hope in the high end of this milage range one has been done. What else needs to have been done or will need to be done?

Thanks,

DTaylor
Go Cowboys!

2000+ with TRAC will take you further down the road in most all instances compared to a rear-lock only 98-99.

OK, so what is "trac"? And do you have a 2001? Do you have navigation? Is it lame or does it really work?

I'm looking at a 100 with 153k on the clock. Supposedly all maintenance has been done. Anything special to look for?

How about tranny issues? I've seen a couple posts that have me a bit worried about that.

Thanks,

DTaylor

TRAC= Traction Control
Yes it works and very well.

I don't have nav.

153K? I hope you're getting it for cheap?

Have them produce the records. Make sure you know of the cost of the 90k service. Or find a mechanic llike I did that can do it for much less than the dealership. You can not delay getting some of this done.

Look at the exhaust system, tires, brakes, rotors, bearings all fluids, belts hoses , suspension (shocks) etc. Frankly all items that should be addressed for secure operation.

Good Luck

18k, 2nd owner, first supposedly had dealer serviced. Has Navigation, DVD.

I agree with Shotts - it is very suspicious. It sounds like the 2nd owner had it long enough to discover some problems. Some will claim oil changes at the dealer as "being dealer serviced." Unless you know a good mechanic or are confident you could sniff out the potential problems, be suspicious when there are only claims and no records to back it up.

Test drive 1 and 2 complete...

I went and drove two nice specimens last night. I still like my 80 better, but this is more for my wife and for a family car.

Here's what I saw:

2001 with navigation, two tone White on Silver with oak interior, 154k on the clock, well maintained but some milage related flaws like trim and seat wear. Still a nice truck. $18k (asking price)

2002 with navigation and rear seat veiwable dvd, Champaign Pearl with gray interior, 63k on the clock, maintenance uncertain, a few minor dings and inoperative fog lights (everything else worked), little if any visible wear, muddy undercarriage (no big deal). Very nice truck. 23k (asking price)

How about these prices?

Any concerns with higher milage on a 100? (my 80 has 225k and I intend to take it at least to 500)

I appreciate the good input from you fine 100 series mudders!

Thanks,

DTaylor

I paid $16,500 for my 2000 (no nav)with 93k. Figure around $1.5k to do the timing chain, brakes and fluids etc. So 63k with nav in the low $20's is not so bad.
However make a list of items that need looked after, then use them to reduce the sell price.

Good Luck!

I agree, this is always a good strategy, and part of my plan. I liked the 02 the best but my wife liked the 01 due to color. She will get used to the drive of a LC and forget the color soon enough...

???? Timing chain? $1500?

The 100 has a belt. For $300 it gets replaced every 90K.

The 2002 sounds like the better value. From my experience and perspective, I would keep looking if you can afford to wait. It is important that your wife be happy with it, and there are other good values out there. I waited and found an excellent value; and even encountered others after the one I bought.

Since you have an 80, you will be able to check out the mechnical and structural aspects. I found my wife could check out the maintenance and care effectively when she checked out the vehicles from her perspective.

Best wishes on your search for the right 100.

These are in various FAQs and get lots of attention:

Don't forget to listen for the exhaust manifold leaks when starting the engine cold and accelerating out of the lot. $600-800 to repair/replace one side. Should be covered under the emissions warranty, if there's any left of it.

Also check if the starter motor or at least the starters "contacts" have been replaced recently. These wear out and give the "CLICK" but no start condition. The starter in 100-Series is buried UNDER the intake manifold on top of the engine block. Dealers look for $400-$600 to repair/replace. (You can DIY if you have $20 for the contact replacement kit, tools and patience).

Check for highway-speed steering shake. Still trying to get this tweaked out of ours. Might be tires/wheels.

Just bought a 00 with 120k miles for 18.4k from a dealership. All vin tags and maintenance done. New michelins. Only 1 key.
