Three of the four are older radios and good for starting out in the HAM world. Fourth radio is a Yaesu FT-2900R and it's brand new! The internet has all kinds of info on these radios.

See Daisy, now you don't have to steal my radio.

My buddy, Ken, who owns all but the FT-2900 has a killer "shack" setup in the basement. He was talking to New Zealand the other day!

so any thought from those in the know on how these stack up with the 7800 and such? the prices are good, but i would think the ability to hit a repeater would be good. i was thinking of the last 2 on there. is the extra $100-$150 worth it?

That's a good question and I was asking that myself. For those of us who turn on the radio ONLY when we're in a convoy situation, the first two radios are fine. Simplex is used primarily for that situation.

The rest of you who are Uber Geeks, you know who you are :D, the last two radios should work out well for the money.

This is an expensive hobby :crybaby:

I'm looking at the 78/7900. Like the idea of remote mounting the control head. $150's not bad... and it's in town! It can be installed this weekend!

Compared to owning Land Cruisers?

Yeah, wait till you get to super geek and start putting in laptops, gps, etc...you know you have to map it all out to track down that one rock you drove over. Glad I keep a small wallet.

I have only used my Yaseu in Simplex situations and I don't see myself using it really in any other situation other than in an emergency hitting a repeater to get to the outside world.

It's pretty nice to be able to communicate beyond the 1-1.5 miles that a CB will reach. Being able to communicate with the convoy leader 20 miles in front is really quite cool.

The Yaesu 2900 is the new, slightly more powerful update of the venerable 2800. I have two 2800 radios, and they are super as it is. These radios are the ideal mobile trail radio in my opinion - rugged, powerful, easy to read, no cooling fan, but they are 2 Meters only and don't have a detachable face plate if those are concerns for your application.

The 7800/7900 are dual band (2M + 70CM), have detachable face plates, and cost $100+ more than the 2800/2900. Personally, I don't have much use for 70CM because there aren't many 70CM repeaters where I live or drive.

In relatively flat terrain, I've communicated from my truck via simplex up to 30-40 miles. Any repeater you can hit will essentially double your range (at least in the direction opposite the repeater), depending on how high the repeater transmitter is and etc. Any modern mobile 2M radio can be programmed for repeater operation quite easily. Yaesu 2M mobiles come pre-programmed with the standard repeater offsets all across the 2M band. You can edit them if you have to but I have never needed to.

The NM linked repeater system is one of the best in the US. You can make contact virtually anywhere in the state and talk with anyone monitoring the Megalink system. Raton to Silver City... El Paso to Farmington. I'm sure there are gaps but the system was designed for state-wide coverage. Utah has a similar system.

If you never travel alone and when alone, you only travel in areas where you have cell coverage then you don't really *need* the ability to communicate with repeaters. Otherwise, you should consider getting a radio with capabilities like the 2800/2900 and spend the time required to learn to use the radio.
