built up pressure in rad???

Hey all,

-an easy one I hope-

I'm perplexed.. Even after my rig has cooled down after a nice drive the pressure remains in the radiator. I open the cap and it comes shooting out cold!!! This can't be right. Why won't it return to the overflow tank. It draws it. New hose and straw??

I had the rad checked recently and all was well.


I'm experiencing some overheating at lower speeds and idle but I'm pretty sure it's the fan clutch. By the way can that be repacked? How? or must I cough up some change for a new one?

I think the fan clutch is like $30 not too bad.

Could be a problem with the radiator cap, you might pick up a new one of those as well. I think they're in the neighborhood of $15.

You need to "Burp" the cooling system.

Park it nose up, turn on all the heaters, leave radiator cap off, (OF COURSE WE ARE STARTING WITH COLD ENGINE HERE). Run it till it gets hot with the radiator cap off, it will burble and slosh then settle down and just flow through the radiator tank. Keep heaters on during this so all the air can get chased out, you may have to top up the tank, (not the resevior tank) as it gets hot and dumps coolant out. Make sure the resevior tank is up to the "Cold" mark and the hose attached to the lid reaches below that level.

agree on the radiator cap maybe being bad, or just rated at too high of pressure and won't release, make sure it is stock or at least stock pressure rated.

over heating could be from the non-bled cooling system. Or could be a bad thermostat stuck half open.

I'd mess with the fan clutch after checking all the rest and bleeding the system.

Hmmm,

Well I did just flush the coolant and replaced with the seal saving factory red. I did try and burp it but maybe didn't get all the air out. I did put the nose uphill and drove the pass. side up on a block to get it a little higher. I'll try again. Driving around the block could have moved some more air pockets.

How steep of a hill are we talking here? I'm gonna pick up a rad cap tommorrow and see if that helps.

Thermostat is brand-new OEM (both seals) 88* C to match the red fan clutch.

You don't have to have it real steep. I just park it with front maybe 6 or 10 inches higher cause that's the grade on my driveway. I would keep it level side to side, you just want the air to go foward, driving around is no better than just letting it sit you want the cap all the way off, not just loose. If you did just do the coolant deal, (I run the red too) that is probably your problem, air in the system that is.

I changed out rear heater hoses last year, burped it twice to get the air out from back there.
