Hi All,

I am in the process of hunting down a 2H to swap into my 40.

I found this:

*NEEDS REBUILD*
2h motor 180k
Overheated and cooked motor
Auto pump good condition
Injectors and head all seem good

Engine had 179 000kms on it so bugger all Had a turbo setup running 8psi of boost. Reason it overheated was a heater hose broke of and the guy kept driving it and cooked it. Pulled it apart and found cylinders were scored.

New to diesels specifically Toyota diesels to I am not sure what the right questions to ask are? What pictures can be taken to reveal anything?
It is located in AUS and I would have to sort out shipping to the US
Asking price is 600AUD is this too much for what it is considering id have to bring it over here?
any input is greatly appreciated!

Read up on 2H motors and ring problems. You might be better off with a 3B especially if you plan to add a turbo. You can source a 3B 5-speed from Canada which might be easier. The 3B is bombproof and its the same block used for the 13BT which is a factory turbo JDM so it takes a turbo nicely.

Yeah the 2H and ring issues seem to be pretty common with boost but could be remedied with the alfin pistons?
this nice thing with the 2H is that it is pretty straight forward coming from a 2F.
what are the t case gearing options with the 3b, I have mentally planned for 2H/H42/Orion.
Is there a better setup for lower crawl without dual cases?

3B 5-speed CDM were a common pairing. The HF55 tranny has a granny 1st gear. Pair this with 411 rear end gears and you have a streetable but off road capable rig. This combo can cruise at 70mph on the highway keeping up with modern traffic.
3B 5-speeds are still around in Canada as most rigs are rusted out.

Hey mate, where abouts in Aus is that motor?

I’d be weary of going to the effort of shipping it over as it’s gonna be pretty hard to send back if it’s stuffed.

With the AUD/USD rate at the moment, could you stretch your budget to say $3k usd?

For that price you could get a fully running 12HT... still more expensive than a 2H but once you add the rebuild cost to the 2H there probably won’t be that much difference and the 12HT is a significantly better engine...

Edit - I should say for $3k usd you could get a 12HT AND a H55F 5 speed gearbox...

I believe its in the sydney area?
Yes agreed the 12HT is superior to the 2H I have not figured the entire cost of the final 2H project but im sure it will be more than I am imagining it will be.
$3k for 12HT/H55 seems like a uper good deal is that before shipping to US?

For what that 2H would cost to get it stateside + rebuild (Provided it's rebuildable) you'd be better off getting a 12HT.

Edit - @Feistl beat me to it

If you are serious, call brad at early landcruiser spares, he will be able to help u if he has one, i know that he has shipped to the US in the past. I gave him my old 2h when i went the 12ht route, they are not worth much over here.

Just have in mind that the 12ht is sought after, and that many of the guys will say no to it leaving AUS

That’d be $3k without shipping...

I purchased a complete HJ61 last year (rebuilt 12ht and good H55F) for $3300 AUD. The body was pretty stuffed but the drivetrain was good. I’ve seen a few 12HT and H55Fs advertised for $4500aud lately...

Yes definitely serious about going down this route.
assuming all things being equal and the 12HT isnt in question. What is a 2H parts motor like that worth and what are some of the details which need to be brought up in terms of parts included vs history of the engine.
With something in the shape that the above engine is in is there much you can really do besides visually check the components for damage/wear?

It's worth maybe $300 to some people, but others would use it as a boat anchor.

The problem is that it has been overheated and that is bad and a big unknown. If it was badly overheated, then most likely that head is cracked, the block could well be too and the block and head will need to be decked as well, crank ground and the rest. So essentially if this is the case, you will be in for heaps $$$$ wise than u need to be. If it were me, ditch than motor and get a better one. They came in the hj47, hj60 and hj75. So they are not hugely rare. Chances are that motor is stuffed, personally I would not be taking the risk with it even if $$$ were not a concern.

My 0.02c

The 2H would be worth buying if it was local and you were only paying for the block itself... but shipping it half way around the world is going to be the expensive part. If it was in Melbourne I would check it out for ya....

Engine Updates:

I tracked down a complete running 2H out of AU. I bougt it complete with h55/split case. The owner had it reconditioned about 20kkm ago. I have yet to open it up and investigate. I saw video of it running before getting pulled.

I got all accessories and as much wiring/sensors as possible. front/rear driveshafts, radiator/shroud, cross member, air filter/ housing, starter, and a bunch of other misc items that were in the engine bay.

I would like to hook up the bare minimum components needed to get it running out of the truck. what are some of the items I should go over before cranking/attempting to a toyota diesel.

tons of work to do before being ready to swap but looking forward to the project.

Overall Im hopeful it is healthy and never seen boost, for now , and generally pretty clean compared to my 2F which I have in the 40 now.

2H swap question.

The end goal for this is to swap into a 40 series. Currently the I have a 2F/H42 in the truck. I plan on rebuilding the 5 spd and split case that came with the 2H, which I am going to take on slowly. Ideally I would like to swap the 2H over as soon as I can so I can sort out wiring, fuel, general fitment, and everything else that goes with an engine swap. when all that is done I would hopefully be able to wheel it for a bit then swap the remaining drive line in when its ready.

Can I mount my H42 and 4 speed case to the back of the 2H? Do I just need to swap the bell housing and clutch or are the input/output not going to be compatible?
