FJ40s are hard to come by for a decent price in our area. Most of them ive looked at have been bastardized with gm engines and chevy axles, like thats supposed to make them more appealing. I'd rather buy one with a blown toy motor.

Ive recently come to the end with my 81 pickup. i love the truck and have put a lot of time and effort into it but, interior wise, it is no longer comfortable for me to drive long distances. Its in the backyard now with a freshly swapped motor, trans, tcase, and axles. the body is really showing its age but the frame, interesting enough, is almost spotless. thats one of the main reasons i hate to get rid of it.

OK...so now im thinking instead of finding a 40 that is overpriced and incomplete, why not buy a FJ40 tub and mate it to my 81 chassis and running gear.

Ive ran across a few companies that sell aftermarket tubs or maybe even getting a tub from out west. I could tailor it to fit my needs and in the end have a really cool project.

I know im rambling, but does this sound crazy?

You would not be the first. I know of at least two or three from VA built up that way. A couple of them were at CMCC this year. IIRC one of them belongs to Cam from Iron Pig. Jim C. can tell you who owns some of the others.

Yes, there is one out west around Piqua. Rocky built it with the junk he had.

Combine a 1980 4WD longbed mini, 1969 FJ40 body, 1987-ish breadvan, and some skillz.

Result:
1980 mini frame, axles, power steering, 35"MT's.
Cummins 4BT/TH400/mini t-case.
FJ40 cab & hardtop cut down to be a slightly extended FJ45 cab.
Scratchbuilt FJ45 looking bed, built to width to accept utility cap off old minitruck bed.

Looks vintage cool, especially with the fresh coat of smurf blue industrial rustoleum.

I am really wanting to start an FJ40 project. If anyone knows of a mostly complete vehicle in any shape for a decent price post up. i've found a couple that im going to look at but one is in michigan and i know it will be rough. it would be nice to drag home a complete truck and begin a couple year resto but ill take what i can get. i am going to sell my 81 crawler or part it out to help with the build. the little pickup has been fun, but my hearts in a 40. thanks for any leads...
