My water pump belt broke the other day so I went out and bought a new one. Installed it and turn on the car and smoke came pouring out the engine compartment. The belt burnt off at the engine pulley. I just repalced the water pump a few months ago and I tried to turn the smog pump pulley but I couldn't budge it by hand. Should I be able to turn the smog pump by hand? I check the belt tension before turn over the engine. What do you guys think, bad smog pump?

Yes, bad smog pump.
Should 'spin' bt hand.

Does your PS leak ? PS fluid onto smog pump is a bad thing....
. . .it's the most common reason for smog pump failure on the 60's.

Do you have emissins testing ?
If not, remove pump, open'back' & remove 'vanes'. the vanes have a thicker than foil band around the edge. When a vane fails (gets disploved by PS fluid), the band jambs between the spinnig drum & pump housing and locker 'er up tight....

If you need pump, via internet you may find a source far cheaper (under $100) than a new toyota unit (hundreds of $).

cool fix, does the pully shaft stay in place, do you trim the fins off to keep it ?

Sounds like exactly what happened to me. I got the pulley from JimC and this is a great time to consider a desmog if you live in an area you can do it.

yeah I did have a power steering leak when I bought. I fixed it awhile ago but I guess it finally caught up with me. So if I gut my smog pump for an 8lb tensioner do I still need to modify other parts of the engine? Or do I need to plug lines or modify the ERG(I think that is what it is called)?

Does anyone think that I may have broke it by putting new hoses on wrong? I had to replace all the 1" (more or less) lines on the smog pump.

And so this maybe causing the problem with my vacuum switch for the a/c compresser idle up? When I got it off the boat and started her up the a/c compressor idle up started to surge and in like 2 second intervals.

No, hooking up hoses will not kill smog pump.

Pully doesn't come off to remove 'vanes': take pup out of rig, back side 9where hoses connect) comes off. You'll see the vanes (with their arms to a centershaft & little bearings) vanes, arms little bearings : pull & trash. Look way down inside & look for thin metal 'band' that may be wedged between drum & housing.

A/C rapid cycling (on-off-on-off) is oft due to the system ;just barely' having enough freon to work; need more.
BUT if you're testing A/C and it's really cold (like inside of truck is already freezinf) then it may just be the A/C control system functioning normally....'test' on a very warm day....

The smog pump can not affect A/C (other than locking/failing pump slowing engine down, and slower engine rev's will cause A/C to kick off)

i've got one of those fancy 8 lb belt tensioners. easy fix. most difficult part was getting the long bolt that holds the pump out and back in.
