I changed out my wheel cylinders, check every single brake line, bled bled bled, and bled some more, and Im still having problems. I push the peddle to the floor with no brakes then when I let off and push the peddle again I get full pressure. The adjusters are a bit whacky and I have the overhaul kits but this just doesn't seem related to the adjusters. Some one help:confused:

could well be the adjusters. if your shoes are far away from the drums you get a ton of pedal travel.

Hmmm, yeah I suppose that could be the case, one push to get them there one push to grab. I don't have the time to get into them today so Ill try that tomorrow.

Did you bleed at the MC, too?

Could have air high up in the lines... Also helps sometimes to tap the MC and the wheel cylinders when you're bleeding them to release trapped bubbles.

I"m 80% sure its your adjusters. I just finished my soa and bled my brakes last night had similar issues till I got the adjuster tool out. I happy to say the brakes work.

I don't have a bleeder on the MC. There are random bolts there I suppose those are bleeder ports? I was thinking about that too. My adjusters are all loose and wobbly so I was going to overhaul it this weekend anyways hopefully thats it.

No, the master does not have a bleeder port or valve. what you do is bleed through the attachment spots for the brake lines. The easiest way is to have someone pump the brakes, while you have a ziplock over the master, and put pressure on the holes where the brakelines attach. liquid will come out, but no air can come in.
however, I doubt that is your problem. you would have spongy breaks with air in the lines, not a lot of travel. I bet once your rear shoes are adjusted, you are fine.

Don't forget to check the bell cranks in the drums. They usually freeze up, causing the adjusters to not work & consequently the shoes never really grab on the drums.

My '84 had poor brakes until I re-did the bellcranks: the shoes looked like new. Now they're fine. Had to do the same thing on my '83 years ago.

Quick thread jack here, has to do with brakes though. My 62's brakes are really soft, and I'm pretty sure I just need some brake fluid. What kind should I use?

Thanks

Are these rig equipped with the automatic slack adjusters for the drum brakes?

Drive in reverse and hit the brakes. Do it a few times and the slack adjusters somewhat adjust themselves as long as they are not seized up.

I do think they have ato-adjusters, but it's not the drive in reverse type. You should just have to pull on the parking brake several times to adjust the rear brakes. Of course, this assumes that everything is working back there.

Go Toyota fluid. The dealer will gladly sell you some.

My auto-adjusters are all loose and what not thats why I bought the rebuild kit in the first place. My brakes were good until I blew a cylinder so I figure the bell cranks are fine.

Ok well the spring on the back of the adjuster was improperly mounted on both drums. Because of that the adjuster wheel was free to turn whenever. I'm pretty sure properly relocating that spring fixed that problem but my brakes are over all stronger now with the new hardware kit.
