brake system TOO sensitive

The brake pedal on the 01 LX seems to exert too much force on to the braking system causing ABS to turn on even during regular stops. I took it to the dealer and the tech. said it was normal.
there's minimal cushion distance between the point where you depress the pedal and the point where the pedal can't be pressed anymore. it's as if you just have to touch the pedal for the car to come to a full halt. doesnt look normal to me.
anyone else experiencing this problem ?
 
ABS should not turn on during normal stops unless you are stopping somewhat quickly and there are bumps in the road/ridges. I have never had the ABS come on during normal driving and to test ABS I have to travel in a straight line, get up to 35 or so and slam on my breaks. Only then does it come on. I have a hard time believing that should be normal. Maybe they changed something from your 100 to mine.
 
does not sound normal at all to me. My 100 only kicks the ABS on it I really REALLY mash the pedal in a panic stop. Really the brakes feel just like all my 1982+ cruisers as far as pedal feel and lock up goes

Break in the brakes properly. There's a pretty good instruction set on stoptech, I think. There's a link back in the discussion on break judder and the myth of warped rotors.

When I bought my 98, I replaced ALL rotors and ALL pads with OE equipment. My brakes were not sensitive and did not require any break in to get them to a stock/correct feel. Moreover, in all of the new break scenarios I have experienced i.e. new break pads on vehicles (this is at least 30 different vehicles ranging from trucks to Porsches), I have never experienced a sensitivity issue due to certain pad vendors. Not discounting you hoser but I just cannot agree with the adjective "vastly". Rotor, caliper and pad size affect stopping at the level you would notice not pad mftr.

Again, just my opinion, but I believe something is wrong with your ABS sensor AND maybe you are just not used to the feel of these brakes. That combination would explain the issue/experience.

I would get a second opinion form a service tech.
 
the lexus tech's in NJ area are just terrible. simply put. I have been dealing with them for other lexus for the past couple of years now and I have found competent techs at independent shops compared to the lexus service trained technicians. All they know is to swap things that they can 'suspect' being bad. Troubleshooting is one skill they are simply not aware of.
Not sure about Toyota service tech's when it comes to LC's.
with that said,
I did take the lx to the dealer yesterday, his answer.. ths is how they are.. BS. because my friend has a 99 lx and has a totally different (OK) feel. unless there were changes made to the brake system from 99 to 01, then that's a different story.

I assume this problem wasn't there before the new pads? Possibly a damaged ABS sensor, as I have been reading up on bearing repack and replacement. The FSM states sevral times to be careful not to damage the ABS sensor when removing the rotors.
 
On my 01 the pedal is definitely more firm than the other vehicles I've owned. However, the ABS doesn't come on unless I hit a bump while braking or I actually start sliding on wet or icy road. Doesn't sound right to me either.
 
I agree with many of the posts above. My brakes feel really good, not "touchy" at all. As a matter of fact, we had a 98 LC a few years back, and I can remember thinking that the brake pedal felt a little weak, in that, if I pushed it down part-way once, then immediately pushed it again (sort of a quick two pump), the pedal felt much better the second stroke. The reason I mention this is because the 99 LX I bought last summer feels EXACTLY the same way the LC did........in neither case would the ABS even remotely kick in unless in a panic stop or low traction situation

My experience with this issue, for what it's worth.............

It doesn't sound like an ABS problem

Sorry for being late to the thread.
I just bought my wife an 02 Land Cruiser in Aug to match my 01. Her brakes are way too sensitive just like you described yours are. I know its not ABS. Having done the brakes in my 01 a couple times, and driven and rode in many may other LCs, I know how things should be. Her 02 had new Toyota brake pads and rotors installed when we got it (100 miles on them from the time of install to the time we took it home).

I've considered breaking in the rotors and pads, or rather trying to re-break them, but at this point I don't think that's the problem. I was going to let it go and figure it out when I change the pads on my rig in the next year, but now we're getting icy weather here in Oregon and I'm starting to worry that her ABS will kick in at each stop.

Have you resolved the problem?
 
It sounds like the hydraulic system for whatever reason is pre-pressurized and not returning to its neutral state. Possibly a sticking caliper or master cylinder out of adjustment. I'd check for a sticking front caliper.
