ok. here is the story. went to change the brake pads on th 01 tacoma, pulled the wheel off and it looked different than what i was used to. looked on the fsm and saw you have to pull the spring and two pins out etc. according to the fsm there are 4 shims and an anti rattle spring that needs to be replaced too. i called the parts store to ask if those were extra parts i needed to purchase, he said no, it was all on the brake pad, direct oe replacement. there does appear to be a shim fixed to each pad and the wear indicator tab. no anti-rattle spring or is that it.

the replacement pads are car quest premium plus akebono pads. are they a direct swap or what? do i need to re-use the shims and anti-rattle spring that are supposedly already in there? somebody set me straight please.
 
you reuse the shim, that is all that is reused- put the new pads in, 2 pins and their retainer spring & your done.
