In a nutshell those HD 7x 8” HP axles use several parts that can be sourced/exchanged from other cruisers but you can’t simply remove the complete knuckle/ hub assembly and mount it on any other Toyota axle or do like a disc brake conversion with them on a 40 series or so. I wish the opposite was tru because I have always fresh inventory of these.

Here is the problem I have with your statement. Just like I said above, I have done it.

While in Latin America with my PZJ70 and while rebuilding the front end I discovered the brake caliper mounting holes were stripped out. I checked with Toyota and no new knuckles were available in the country. I talk to my good friend who is in the local 4wd club and he tells me Hilux will work. He also says the guy who owns the big fab shop in town for the 4wd club has a used set of Hilux knuckles and will bring them over. I have no idea if these were LN106/07 knuckles because I never asked, I suspect they were and for those that don't know the LN106/07 is a non-USA spec Hilux with a SFA made from about 1990-97.

I go to put the Hilux knuckles on my truck, I already had the new Cruiser trunnion bearing race set in the knuckle ball, and it won't clear. What it is hitting it the race, only the race for the trunnion. It is a very small amount that is not allowing it to clear, like I have mentioned before in this thread, a mm or less. I talk to the guy who supplied these and say, hey these won't work. He says yes they will and before I say why he already knew it was a prob with the trunnion, so he suggests to just grind it a little bit or use the Hilux trunnion bearing. Not wanting to grind it, which by the way Georg and I have discussed grinding to fit these Hilux knuckles, I asked if he had some old Hilux races laying around so I could try it. He said yes, gave me some and I proceeded to bolt on the knuckle. I only used the Hilux races, it was for test fitting purposes. The Hilux race and bearing is slightly shorter than the Cruiser, IE the Cruiser runs a slightly larger trunninon bearing but not larger in diameter, it is taller or as I said above more "proud". I didn't have a set of calipers to measure any of this nor was I trying to figure this out in terms of if I could use Hilux knuckles in the future or whatever, I was simply trying to put it back together. During the rebuild process but before I was done I noticed the caliper mounting holes on these replacement knuckles were not 100% too. They were not as bad as mine but one hole was compromised and another was not so great. At the same time I found new knuckles for my truck in the Middle East online for just under $150/each. I decided to just slap it back together with my old knuckles and order those or deal with the issue once back up here in the USA. Getting the right tap down there or more importantly the right grade bolt was not happening so I didn't want to deal with drilling and tapping down there. So before I installed the knuckle wiper kit on the back of the knuckle or for that matter the spindle I pulled them off, gave them back to the guy I got them from and got my $100 back and put my old ones back on.

So @joekatana you are telling me I didn't do something I did. It is also hard for me to take your info on faith alone since you have been wrong before, such as when you told the Aussies on Facebook there is no such thing as an HDJ78 and you rudely said they should go do their research before posting on the internet. Man you sure were wrong about those HDJ78's! I even knew there was such as thing as an HDJ78 since I have spent hundreds of hours combing through parts books for all 70-series models. As you have happily pointed out a number of times in my threads, I am a newbie to 70's which is either you trying to prove you know better and are right or you trying to discredit me or both. It is condescending, rude and disrespectful as well as arrogant to communicate this way. I am all for the wealth of knowledge you have and that knowledge being shared but I don't consider you to be the guru of 70-series.

Any ways, I think it is obvious what I was trying to figure out here in this thread. I replaced my knuckles a few months ago with new OEM ones. I tossed the old ones or I could compare to the 60-series knuckles I have sitting here. Bolting up the Hilux knuckles is not really what I am trying to show can be done here. Rather, do Hilux or other brake calipers work on a 70? Is the outer axle the same so a person can use things like chromoly spindles readily available here in the USA? That is the whole point of the thread and info I was trying to figure out.

Cheers

Not that I have any skin in this particular game but didn't you spell out exactly how you CAN'T just throw a LN series knuckle on without compromising the trunnion bearing? I just bolted a dual diaphragm LN series brake booster and 1" bore master cylinder onto my PZJ75 this morning and while it is ALMOST a direct fit I had to make a decision to modify the threaded actuator to work.
I don't see how Joeri is in the wrong for stating that no you can't walk into a Toyota dealership and get Hilux parts to bolt on without some compromise that many won't want to make. Having owned a Hilux and now a HP 8" 70 I would LOVE there to be more cross over, and if the spindles work it would be great news but I feel like these threads just turn into pissing matches for no reason. There is a lot of s*** talking that can be had in PM's if needs be but I gotta be honest, these constant brash responses don't make the best impression. Adding to the discussion is one thing but picking fights is another. I've learned a lot from Joeri and his experience and I've enjoyed following your PZJ build and your contributions but at the end of the day who would you rather sit down and discuss this with...someone composed or someone yelling?

RMP&O
The 60 and 70 knuckles can be cut and reversed and bolted up on any full floater rear diff housing to have rear disk brakes. This mod is done on fj/hj45 series trucks downunder with the hand brake on the transfer case. It will work on the 70 series trucks but the problem is you wont have a hand brake.

The hzj75's have the same front calipers as hilux 4runner maybe beno can check this out for brand new mine spec truck calipers for availability.

Oh man you got me........ I was wrong about the HDJ78 and I apologized for it also ok, I grew up with lhd 7x models so yes if there is a model made for one particular market on the other side of the world I might be wrong about it.

My point was to try and avoid that based on your info someone would buy the outers from a 7x 8” HD axle and tries to upgrade his drum brake 40/55 series axle with that assembly, yes some parts of this assembly can be used on other trucks but you just can’t swap it over from one to the other in this case , I think the picture of the parts for the rebuild kits speak for themselves.

On the area of front brakes I believe that a 1990 and on 70 series shares a brake rotors with an 1980s 60 series, but what about the brake pads, are these the same as the v6 4runner?

What years hilux/4runner?

I used 1990 4runner 3.0 L V6 brake calipers. (Trim brake backing plate to fit)
Also 1990 FJ80 Master cylinder and dual-diaphragm brake booster. (JDM BJ74 booster/master heat shield had to be fabricated to fit)

Idea to do these mods came from trailblazers on MUD.

I hear ya, I do truly hear ya.

I avoided this thread since I posted above. It gets old when a person is always challenging what you say. I am the kind of guy (obviously) that is going to respond to that rather than ignore it.

And for the record, I didn't once say that people should or need to be bolting on the knuckle, all I said is that it is possible. The whole point of the thread was to see if other brake calipers can/will work along with other parts as well. The thread was not even about bolting on Hilux knuckles. Joeri decided to focus on the knuckle part though, run with it and the rest everyone can read here. If he wants to clarify the knuckle details so somebody doesn't try and use the 70 knuckles for an FJ40 disc brake swap, no worries but I don't see why anybody would even try that. Especially since the 70 knuckles are not readily available here and disc brake swaps on 40's is more than well documented. I am doing one myself right now using 60-series parts. That is not exactly what he did though, he did his best to try and prove me wrong regardless of what the point of the thread is/was. He picked what he didn't like in what I said and focused on that ignoring anything else I said. It is not the first time he has done this or other things like smart ass comments in my threads as well as being disrespectful in for sale threads I have, it gets real f'ing old. So if my responses seem brash maybe it is because I am getting a bit tired of it.

Besides this stupid BS drama....

Thanks to those who have contributed to the thread in an attempt to show what can or may work. It sure would be nice to be able to spend $40 on calipers rather than $250.

Cheers
