Bought a 2000 LX. I think it's a money pit. I could use some encouragement.

Just wanted to add my $0.02. I have a 2006 and bought it almost exactly 3 years ago. I had the AHC removed and bought the 2.5' OME heavy lift from Slee. HUGH difference in ride comfort. AHC was like driving on a cloud, the OME is....well lets just say way stiff and even going over speed bumps in a parking lot can be jolting. If you don't want/need the lift, stick with repairing the AHC for a much smoother ride.

With regards to the AHC "off" light consistently blinking, I recall that in addition to there being AHC dedicated relays in the fuse box under the hood (I pulled them out), there is supposed to be another one in the DS cab just under your knee near the firewall. For no good reason, I haven't explored that (I think that Slee folks told me about this) so mine blinks continuously. Sadly I've gotten used to it....

When I bought my 100, I brought it to a Toyota mechanic and had him go thru it bumper to bumper, and he provided me a very extensive list of items that needed attention, including all items that are recommended by the factory at 90k miles, which the PO didn't bother to do. The estimate for all this stuff was $3000 so the PO agreed to credit me $2000 but not the entire cost. DEFINITELY replace the timing belt (can't recall if you said you had or not). All fluids replaced including cooling system, both axles, tranny fluid, everything. I also replaced all cooling and other misc hoses under the hood including the heater "T" fittings, plus bought an extra one. Also found that the steering column telescoping motor is/was bad too, but I haven't gotten around to replacing it either.

I too think that for the price you paid, you can expect to have alot of items requiring attention, but as others have said, the spark plugs are a bit of a mystery and hope that your mechanic is/was able to get em' loose. Can't offer any other suggestions to get them out other than what others have already suggested.

Good luck and keep us posted as to progress!

I'd have to say that the coilover install is pretty impressive. How does it ride?

Pretty crappy. It makes a lot of noise. It bounces. I don't think they are well suited for the weight of the front end. I had the torsion bars reindexed and it rides even worse. Sprung very tight as you can imagine and os harsh, bouncy and throws the VSC occasionally. I eventually just bought some stock LC bars and shocks that are being installed as I type.

as others have said, its par for the course really. once you get over the shock that these are after all mechanical machines and prone to some care to keep operating optimally/ not immune from issues; ditch the ahc (least expensive route), get the spark plugs switched out, flush your coolant for red (just for peace of mind) and point it where you want to go and go.

The monetary impact will be minimal when you add up what you paid and the cost of the work described, will still have you at a very reasonable price point for the truck. The initial concerns will seem minor/inconsequential with some time enjoying behind the wheel
