a couple of buddies of mine are on a six month trek across south america. mostly backpacks and buses. they sent me some pics of these rigs they use to shuttle people across this huge salt flat. it's called Antiplano and it's on the southwest corner of bolivia.

i don't know anything about these cruisers. just thought you might like to see how confident some companies are with these rigs.

there are a couple more pics at this site where they are keeping a web journal. mytripjournal.com/southbound2005

there's even some sweet 60's or 62's haulin gear.

Bolivia

The region is the Altiplano (from Alto e plano, which literally translates to "High and Flat...it's the foot hills of the Andes Mountains (Cordillera Real) between Bolivia and Peru/Chile. The Salt Flat is called the "Salar de Uyuni".

Tons of cruisers roam both the Andes and the jungles below them. There are also a lot of Mitsubishi Montero's, Nissan Patrols, and Range/Land Rovers. For the most part, the governments down there use either Patrols or Cruisers though.

Nice trucks, and pics!
