I've got a problem eminating from the front (near alternator) of my '87 FJ60. It's intermittent which is a real pain. Sometimes it's just a squeal. I have all new belts and a new Power Steering pump. The A/C compressor is shot (WHERE DO I GET A NEW ONE?) so I removed the belt to eliminate that as the source.

Now sometimes there is a clutch-like sound...something switching on and off (that's the boing, boing). My mechanic says he can't hear anything and he has had it for days. Now he says the water pump is leaking and maybe that is the cause.

 Help!

Check for play in all the pully bearings. The water pump is easy to check. move the fan backward and forward. if you can feel and/or see the play on the water pump pulley, then it may need to be replaced.
Check the fan clutch as well.

how many miles on the engine
