Wanna remove the flares on the 80. No problem. Then there are the lefover holes and L-bracket thingies on the doors. I don't want to linex the area, I want just good old matching paint.

Who professionally would you suggest to fill the holes (not bondo) and paint? Any guestimates on price?

Easily over a grand, perhaps several depending on how 'good' a job you want. If you want the same color (not two-tone), they'll be painting most of the truck. I would be skeptical that you can find anyone who will not use bondo- the right way to fix holes is to weld them closed and then use filler to finish. 'Metal finishing' is reserved for vehicles that have thick enough metal to be repaired using heat-i.e; pre-70's.

I was going to weld mine closed, but some of the holes are quite large. I think you'll end up with metal tape and Rhino liner. The alternative would be very expensive.

Yeah, metal tape and rhino liner, I'm about $100 in for the materials so far, and I'll be done in 2 days.

I found little dents under my flares...most places would charge you extra for each one they have to pop out or fill.

Thats a lot of space to color match and blend as well...I'd expect it to be pretty pricey even at a cheap place like Maaco.

It's always less money to have them spray the WHOLE vehicle instead of a few spots because of the blending.

The hole fill procedure is to cut small pieces of sheet metal, hold them on the backside of the hole, tack weld in place, grind and smooth with filler. I would two tone it in a contrasting color or like Spike said you will have to paint most of the truck.

Okay, so if two-toned and tack welded, you guys still thinking $2k? That's obviously quite spendy.

Don't know about pricing, not in the body biz. Helped Brian with his, but it had some other "slight" body issues requiring a complete repaint.:D

Probably closer to one. You gonna wheel it? I would guess that most people who remove the flares are gonna wheel it, and don't require perfection in the job. Maaco is about the cheesiest place I'd consider. Call your insurance agent, for the most part the shops they deal with are good quality. Rhinolining is the most cost-effective method I have heard of, and IMO the finish looks good and wears well on an off-road vehicle.

The way we destroy our trucks on brush....what's wrong with using bondo?

Nothing, as long as you're not trying to repair the holes with filler exclusively. The filler will pop out if there's nothing behind it, thus the sheet-metal backing or plug welding for smaller holes. The filler should only be used for cosmetic purposes.

Ahhhh, see what I know? I asked because I want that xxxx gone from the LX. Or, the LX gone.

You gonna wheel it?

I've been wheeling this thing for about 10 years now, but not exactly the types of trails I know y'all like to do. It's certainly no road truck or mall cruiser. I just hate the look of the flares and with most of them chipped and peeling now want to consider their removal. I was hoping in the couple $100s but have tons more I need to do for $1k like a good start for 4.88s

Make up your mind! :D

We're replacing the T-case front bearing JUST IN CASE when I do the rear main. Slee wondered about this bearing. Then....I should have a D/C rear driveshaft here that we'll slap in also. If the D/C shaft doesn't settle this thing down, the LX will be for sale. I'm praying as I luv the truck and have a boatload of dough in it.

What year is it? The later plastic ones take a pretty good beating, but the paint gets torn up from branches, etc. Maybe just paint them on the truck with textured paint like hammer tone, trunk paint, etc to make them look better, last a little longer?

CHibo-I have green flares you can have for free. Only 3 left, the other 3 were mashed or broken. Let me know if you want them. They are from a 40th.

If you are in the valley Stuttgart Southwest does excellent work. They are a Porsche shop but their body shop portion will work on anything. Ask for Alex 480-968-6764.

I recently asked them about this and Jack (the owner of the shop) said "Find another flare and put them back on". He said by the time you weld the holes and blend the paint it is going to be some serious money.

Cruiserdrew - If Chibo doesn't claim them, do you have the passenger's side front flare?
