Bob needs paint

Bob is a 85 FJ60 with the metallic blue color..

He needs a new paint job badly.

I found a buddy to shoot it (used to be a pro) and is going to shoot it in a tent in the front yard..

My main questions is what type of paint should I use? Chances are it will be about 55* outside when the truck is shot. I can stick a heater in the tent if that helps..

I really want to retain the stock metallic blue color. No clearcoat and have a durable finish to it.

The lower half of the truck will be rhinolined..

As will be the center of the hood. So I really do not need that much paint..

Ideas? A good single stage?

Oh it vary' s per area but here it is under 100 bucks per gallon(mixed of course)

Honestly the paint is not the killer it it is the reducer, hardener , paper etc etc.


If you are doing it under a tent please get a tack rag and solution(last step before spraying) Most forget that step.Last time i painted was 1 year ago or so I payed like 350 bucks(for everything) but I had plenty left over.

Sounds like you are doing the prep work yourself if you need anything give me a yell.

Omni by PPG is the cheaper product, also Masons by dupont I belive is pretty cheap.


Want something that will stand up to abuse, endura is great but pricey.

I'd deffinately look into renting a spray booth. They use strong cross ventialtion to keep the overspray from resting on the painted surfaces & ruining the paint job. VERY important with a single stage metallic. Its also WAY easier that screwing with a tent.

Dupont Nason, PPG Omni or Napa Crossfire will run you probably close to $200 for a gallon of 1stage paint with reducer and hardener. Ask the paint supplier how to mix the paint for spraying in cold weather & also consult the MFG's spec sheet.

Try looking into diamondvogel.com. They make a nice line of 2 component urethanes that when dry, you could literally comb your hair in the reflection.

The name I would get if you can is pinnacle 460. Should be able to get a gallon for under $80. The can on the right is pinnacle 415 , which is not quite as shiny as 460.

Also, try Earl Sheib & Maaco, to see if they will just do the spraying if you do all the prep & provide the paint. I guarantee those guys can put down the paint well (sprayer probably do 20+ cars a week) & give you a much better job than can be achieved in a makeshift booth or garage. I bet they could do it for $200 or so if you provide everything & do the masking as well.

After spending close to 150 man hours on prep & 5 hours building a makeshift booth, I was kicking myself in the ass for spraying in my garage. There was no way to keep the overspray down, when doing the whole body... you might be able to elimiate that problem by spraying one panel at a time but you'll be there for a week

I have called around multiple times over the years...

Never amounted to anything...

Mace........honestly they blow.


We call them oil changers here cause it seems they can paint a car the same amount of time it takes Wall Mart to change your oil.

All they do is DA with 220 and spray

Not really`. I 90% of the time use the 1 stage.sssh don't tell anyone i just add a tad bit more harder for a extra shine.

Optional of course. No I have good luck with that paint......very forgiving.

I always use cold water after 72 hours seems to really help that is if you are not baking the paint.
