Blown steering gear, rebuild?

Oh; the whining stopped, not me or the motor.
The hose to the reservoir had some atf in it. The pump had some, but not much in it when I took it out yesterday. Perhaps 3 or 4 Tablespoons.

Time is the killer. If wtor has seals on a shelf they have me beat by a mile. With some family-related crises and me tearing into the cruiser, I have not really driven it since early June.

Sounds like the bottom bearing is not any good, so it took out the new seal. I talked to Mark at West Texas Offroad yesterday.
I asked about sending a kit, which he has except the Toyota boxes give him issues with small internal changes. From the conversation
it would be best to send to them and have it done properly. This seems very reasonable
and it's about a 1 week turnaround. I'm in Canada, so it's different proposition for me as costs get significantly higher for
shipping etc.

Amusing, as I spoke to Mark briefly yesterday also.

I'm going on work rotation so I'm not working on anything for weeks. I'm going to order a seal kit.

The reason I'm posting this link is A:I've already ordered parts from these guys and its good pricing/legitimate business/FAST delivery.
B: in the bottom it has 'vehicle fitment', showing how many models are served by the same steering gear box. I hope this helps others, too.
I've been told that it is difficult to get the bearings, but I've also had good luck with this other company which link I'll post too.
This is for a 1985 BJ70 ( which from all my research is the same steering gear box ), but it has the Toyota numbers and how many of each
bearing are needed. So I'll order the bearings from them if Toyota in BC prices are out of line. I've also ordered from these guys before
and had same degree of satisfaction as A: described above.

I hope this helps you out.
Do you have a service manual to work from? There is one posted in the online manual thread on this forum. I think the hardest thing is
removing/reinstalling the pitman arm.

Cruiserpilot, that is some good information.

I bought a pitman arm puller that worked very well.
I had to put a good deal of tension on and then hit the arm with a hammer.

that tool above is what I used, works great. If you can't get it on at first try taking the nuts off of the bolts that hold the steering box to the frame and move it as needed to make room. When I rebuilt my steering box, both end seals, the pitman arm end and the steering shaft end, have superseded part numbers that DO NOT fit, they are both too big, at least for my box. I was able to get the rest of the parts from Toyota.

I sent the steering box off to West Texas Off Road.
It should get to them Weds.

West Texas Off Road got my steering box Wednesday.
They found the sector shaft was not tightened correctly.
It will be on its way back to me later today.
Awesome service.

rockauto sells reman units, and you return your core. With a 5%off discount code and if you live in the USA likely a hard deal to beat. If you plan to rebuilt it with toyota parts then you will end up with a superior product then a reman tho.

Got a link for an '85 BJ70?

When I said that I was thinking about ordering and now I am not sure if any of them are for the 70 series.

On rockauto you can distinguish engine and pick 85 3.4 litre did 60 series land cruiser come with 3B's as well? I know the two trucks have different steering gears, unfortunately. I was going to order one myself and now i'm not sure what to do. My gear is weeping as well... Toyota wants 4000$ for a new one :(

cruiserparts.net wants 500$ and you gotta get the core to em, I think it said 500$ core charge.

I wouldn't worry about the pump as long as it had some oil it's a tank. You will know once you refill it, but these pumps aren't known for failure.

West Texas Off Road. The shipping will be high.
Good people and good work though.
