Ok, scratching my head here....my sons 02 LX470 blew a spark plug and busted the coil while driving home last night. Apparently, the PO tried a helicoil repair and we were of course unaware. He was driving home last night, check engine light came on, starting running rough...then louder noise from engine compartment, then the motor just died. Luckily, he was able to coast into a parking lot off the main road. It blew the plug (#5 cyl), damaged the coil (i mean broke it at the top exposing the wires), now the rig wont even turn over. All dash lights and gauges work, relays are all good. brake booster spins up and seems fuel pump as well. When we turn the key, nothing happens with the motor.

Had it towed home, looking to order a new/ reman head (anyone have a good source?), head gasket kit, TB/WP kit since we have to tear down the whole engine basically to get the head off. Checked all the fuses, replaced relays and fuses from my 99 LC (swapped them all out to see if a relay was blown or something).....also swapped out the 100A and 30A fuse right off the battery......still no crank....I can hear the starter relay clicking but starter wont engage. Could something have shorted out when the coil broke apart? what else should i check? ECU? leaving the battery disconnected over night to see if that might reset the ECU. Also, scan tool wont read anything....tried several times.

When i have everything taken a part i can check the starter but there were no issues with it prior to the incident. Anyone have any idea what might cause the motor/starter to not even engage/turn over?

2002 LX470, 255k miles, up until now ran like a top. Dallas, TX Area.

thanks for any advice or help!

Bad battery, low charge, loose connection?
Yeah checked all those. And double checked when replacing the 100a block fuse on the positive cable. All is good and tight and fully charged

try banging on the starter with a long 1/2" extension
Might try that and see if it does anything. I’ve heard that before when a starter is on the fritz. But this one hasn’t shown any signs of failure ( yet).

I after you try banging on the starter I think you should they to turn the engine over "by hand" to make sure it's not locked up before you move forward.

ok so the drivers side head is off, machine shop is rebuilding a different head for me i sourced locally (one without the stripped spark plug hole). pulled the starter too, had it checked at Orielley's and it checked out good. Considering rebuilding the starter since im in it this deep anyway......any other ideas as to why the starter wouldn't actuate when things were all together on the rig?

Use a jumper wire on the starter relay terminal. Remove the starter relay from the driver’s side fuse block, and jump the two terminals toward the rear. That will eliminate a bad relay. You could also swap one from another position.
