Well guys i was driving around town in my 93 mini truck last night and started overheating......blown headgasket.....not sure exactly which one it is since the rupture is near the back of the motor and i cannot see where the anitfreeze is coming from.

I started stripping down the motor as soon as i got home and i have it apart down to the heads now........now i have to get some head gaskets.....

more to follow.

That sucks. Those 3.0 liter engines sure have that issue. Isn't there that non-recall service bulletin thing where they'll repair those if you ask?

Ummm.....

if you are leaking antifreeze, that would explain the overheating. could it be just a blown or leaky hose, maybe heater type????

good point.

that would suck.

but i would think that he has already covered that department.
i hope so.

a head gasket is a lot more work than a hose.

Unfortunately i was working at a toyota dealer from 1994-2000, so I have done hundreds of headgasket jobs on the 3.0's and early 3.4's. And I have to tell you that I have NEVER seen a 3.0 blow externally. They always seem to blow coolant into the combustion chamber and oil passages in the block. I am not saying yours couldn't be the first, but I do highly doubt it. I would be willing to bet on the coolant tube that sits in the valley of the motor. You may want to invest in a coolant system pressure tester, or borrow one from a buddy. You could save yourself tons of work! I do have to admit though that I would be nervous of the headgaskets depending on how bad it overheated. Make 100% sure of the cause of the leak before you put it back together. Only thing worse than doing them is doing them twice! Good luck!

According to his thread, he is already tore down to the head so no work saved there. The coolant hose is suspect and I would trust Ian considering his experiences. There is nothing greater than actual experience when it comes to mechanical issues-rarely does something deviate from historical precedents i.e. being blown internally as opposed to externally.

Just my .02

Ian, I don't want to argue with you and I am very interested in what you say but i will say this....My wifes 91 4runner's 3.0 blew externally.....

Where is this hose you are talking about in the valley of the motor?? Thanks....do you have a phone number i could call you at??

Oh OK. I see now, you said "down to".

yeah, I'm not sure i want to tackle taking the heads off, I didn't realize that taking the heads off would be more work than getting to the heads.....Right now if i could find the problem and if the problem isn't the head gasket(s) Then all i will have to have is the seal for the Air Chamber and a few small gaskets.
