The other day both my alternator and waterpump belts snapped causing my 1hz to overheat big time. It went over the gauge and steamed out the radiator. I had a mechanic do a blown head gasket test and he found that it seem fine. Checked the compression etc. Since then I've driven it and it's not skipped a beat however my coolant now has this dirty/metallic like substance in it (doesn't seem to be oil). Is this a sign that I do actually have a blown gasket? Cheers, Dan

What engine is that you speak of ?

1HZ is a non-US engine. The gunk in your radiator is likely just debris that worked loose when it basically got steam cleaned when it overheated. If the compression test shows good, you should be fine. I would check for bubbles in the overflow tank and probably do a rad flush as well.

I agree with the above post in that it’s probably just debris. R and r the coolant and then test with the kit mentioned above. Sounds like the mechanic checked but did not replace the coolant? Or, if this is new coolant, and you’re worried about debris circulating through the system, just do another fluid changed for good measure. Could even flush with a garden hose and then replace with new fluid.

Almost looks like old school powdered "Stop Leak" from some previous "repair" .
