I had to swap a failing alt today and think I solved 2 other problems.

There has been a smell of coolant and a slow loss from the system but it is so wet this time of year in the PNW that I couldn't pin point the leak. Now I think the leak took out my alt and has shown its self.

Take a look at the photos. Is this a basic water pump failure or is this coming down from the head?

Thoughts?

Looks like a leaky WP gasket to me. Though kinda hard to tell from the angle, hopefully someone with more than 1 TB/WP job under their belts will chime in.

I can almost guarantee it's not a head gasket.

99 percent chance time for a water pump / timing belt since once you are that involved might as well do it all doubt it's a head gasket... you could pressurize the system and find the leak I'm sure but... basically every repair requires about the same labor as the full timing belt waterpump service....

Tough call, corrosion line is a bit high for water pump. Could be pump or could be from above. I'd start from top (under throttle body) working your way down pulling #1 (PS) T-bet cover. If it doesn't show, I agree with Julian, you need to tear down front.

Take a look at these pictures, you'll see other spot a leak can be coming from above water pump:

It is not the "Wet" its the dried Pink coolant way up there that has me thinking...

WP

Mine looked the exact same way when I did the TB and water pump job. WP actually had such a thick build up around the bottom of the housing and at the bottom weep hole, it actually sealed itself and stopped leaking. Prior owner never had a clue.
