Not to be a negative nancy, but you can get the non-ruggedized version of that E7420 for like $400 and break 4 of them and come out even.

Nevertheless, great laptops.

Don't worry about the negative nancy part, i always welcome criticism. If i am making a bad call i want someone to point it out and i appreciate them taking the time to do so.

With that said, if you can get me an 8th gen i7, or even 8th gen i5, windows 10 pro, 256gb of solid state, 16gbs of ddr4 ram and a dedicated graphics card for 400 then let me know.

Agreed. If you ever want a laptop (or many other things) I recommend looking at slickdeals.net, a "deal aggregation" forum. Great way to find too many things to empty your wallet.
stay away from bensbargains and slickdeals unless you want to spend a lot of money!!

Don't see any good deals at the moment, but i've gotten 7200 models for 250, and they show up with time left on the original warranty.

Are you wanting a gaming laptop or something to run interwebs and techstream?

here's a taste of i5/i7 with 8gb ram. you can add a second 8gb module for $29 off amazons.

Looks like they are running Black friday sales on eBay as well, where some things are over 20%. This 160W Flex is 30% off on ebay instead.

@JZelnick Thanks for the heads up. I have not ordered the oil yet but will give them both consideration. Also, your link did not work for me so i will relink it.

I got that exact same solar panel on amazon a few weeks ago for 150... pretty solid deal

Those are decent deals, but once you factor in everything else i am not saving that much. This will be a work computer, and each time i replace it i need to take it back to our warehouse in NC to have it loaded with the software i need; namely photoshop and NCR/counterpoint for sales. It will also serve the purpose of being my personal computer and video/photo editing work rig. With each computer it takes a bit of setup work so i would prefer not to replace them every 2 years, rather than 5+ years. 5 years on a the road for a normal computer will be sketch. I don't want to have a computer break while i am on the road if i can help it. If i was staying put, then any computer will work really.

Neither one of those show windows 10 professional, so add $100 to both.
Rugged series are business class - which comes with 3 instead of 1 year warranty - thats a 150 dollar upgrade

1st one:
768 display - need least 1080p to best work with 1080p video editing
8gb of ram - need to upgrade to 16gb at least - add $50
To bump the i5 to an i7 8th gen, is an additional $268 through dell.
no dedicated graphics card - which helps for editing videos and photos - add $200

2nd one:
no dedicated graphics
7th gen instead of 8th gen i7 - not sure how much difference in value
no solid state drive

thats just what i can see.

Once you add those things in it ends up being around 1000+ on both new and outlet site. Correct me if i am wrong though and thanks for your time!

Once you match or beat the specs then remember to add value for the extra piece of mind from knowing it is built to be reliable. Gotta be careful not to value a 4runner the same as a land cruiser ;), just because the specs look similar.

i swapped out the images after my initial post. most of the latitudes will come with pro, and the 3yr warranty. It sounds like you know what you need and you've done your homework.

The $219 E5429 (above) will meet the needs of most people :)

I'd buy a W10 pro key on ebay for $6 instead. Same for office. No reason to buy those retail! I personally hate Dell computers (on one as I speak). My personal computer at home is an Asus, with similar specs to my work computer, but works 10x better.

That's a very good point, and will come in handy if i consider anything other than a Rugged series (they all come with windows pro).

I love ASUS (i think all avid gamers like myself do) as well but could never find good refurb deals on them, and i usually don't pay new. The reason i go Dell is because they do an excellent job of listing their Refurbs, as well as have much bigger selections for refurbs at reasonable prices. I could always reliably get one for about 50% off retail for current models from their outlet.

From my experience, spec for spec the Dell refurb gaming desktops are much cheaper, even the Alienwares (which i have 2 of and love them both for the price i paid).

I agree. I have to admit my needs are far past the needs of most people in terms of computer specs. My current work rig for photoshop is 64GBs ram with a GTX 1060 Graphics card (DELL XPS). Photoshop does use up every bit of that RAM.

I am compromising performance and render times for reliability with the mobile work comp with considering the Rugged. I'd rather have a slower computer that runs than a fast one that doesn't; i call it the 70 Series Philosophy XD.

Wow expected to come in here to see deals on land cruiser accessories, didn't realize this was a laptop thread.

Anyway even better than slick deals check out gun.deals | Guns and Ammo Search Engine and Gun Deals

That was me. I figured a land cruiser forum was a good place to ask for advice on a rugged laptop that can survive some heavy wheeling, and that the Black Friday/Cyber Monday thread was a the best place to ask for advice on a cyber week sale regarding such. If anyone has experience with reliable products that can take a beating for years and years, i figured it would be the Land Cruiser folks.

There is 1 new one as well (rugged extreme 12" tablet) at the outlet in case anyone else was considering one. It is priced much cheaper (refurb price for a new unit) if you buy it new from Dell Outlet as opposed to same one from Dell.com. Only 1 total quantity though so might not be there for long. I ended up going with the 14 rugged (laptop) scratch and dent model and got a really good price!
