Well, on New Years Eve my fantasy of re-powering my BJ70 became a reality.
I cooked the 3B in the 41degC heat whilst arguing with Telstra on the phone.

I was ideally hoping to transplant with a 15B for some serious grunt https://forum.ih8mud.com/70-series-tech/547236-bj70-engine-upgrade-3b-13b-14b-15b.html But after calling places all over Australia, the pick of the available bunch was a 13B-T. Apparently it's easier to get a hold of a femur from a Stegasourous than a 3B...

The 13B-T was sourced from "The Engine Exchange" in WA. An excellent bunch of guys, extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Customer service like I had forgotten even existed. They more than happy to send a few pics of what they had on the shelf, and advise what I'd be heading into with the various swap options.

The 13B-T was a god deal I believe, cheaper than a few of the other 2nd hand Japanese imports I got quotes for. Hopefully it performs like it's supposed to, although the guys at The Engine Exchange gave me a 6 month 10,000 Km warranty with it so not terribly concerned.

I also get to keep the 3B, which was still running before we took it out. We're going to probably re-build ourselves and sell to clear up valuable space in the garage. Let me know if anyone's interested.

It was 4.5K, plus getting it delivered to SA, which I arranged myself for around $300, door to door.
They seemed to have a decent range. I only asked about the 13B and 15B though. They had 2 13B-T's in stock when I called, a 6 bolt and an 8 bolt. They were the last 2 of a batch of ten they had imported.

Others in Brisbane wanted 6.9K + me to freight up to them my old 3B!

Well today was a big day;

-Modified house to be able to remove engines
-Extracted 3B Engine.
-Pressure washed the engine bay, underbody, engine components and dog (It loves to get involved).
-Reassembled 3B (manifolds etc that were removed for engine extraction) ready for storage then re-build.
-Cooked roast lamb on webber, drank beer.

Here are some pictures of the progress;

Engineering the house to support the weight of the 400kg 3B.

The Tirfor, a magic apparatus! Firstly responsible for almost destroying our hoist Rev01 setup, but extremely handy in winching the lifeless 'cruiser fwd and back during engine removal and also up the driveway after it's bath trip! Many thanks to Danny for his help, loan of the various rigging apparatus, pneumatic goodies and advice!

More progress and pictures to follow tomorrow hopefully. The 13B-T is supposed to arrive in Radelaide after it's 4-day trip from Perth via truck (Watson's Transport).

I am a little concerned about your priorities ....shouldn't the eating and drinking come first?:)

Today's lessons

:

-The 3B is 400kg. That is a lot. Make sure (Obviously) have a good solid overhead anchor point for hoisting. We do not have a workshop as such and had to McGyver a lifting beam. For the actual hoisting, we tried using the Tirfor anchored on the ground, but: that DOUBLES the load. $400Kg load pulling from the ground (through a pulley) a 400Kg engine = 800kg load on the overhead beam = Cracking noises from the single beam we had initially! We visited Bunnings for procurement of our hoist Rev02 parts, the $/Strength ratio was on favour of wood by about 1.5:1. Meaning, you can buy a few big wooden beams for the price of some measly steel ones. Our setup cost about $60 for the 3x3M beams + $8 for the bolts holding them together + $99 for the 2 ton block and tackle from the dodgy Chinese bargain warehouse, which performed flawlessly.

-The gearbox is mounted back-heavy. Meaning: When you lift the engine, the gearbox tilts backwards, making it tricky for the spline to slide out of the clutch plate etc. Once we worked this out, we supported the back of the gear-box with a trolley jack and then the engine slid out with only a little coaxing. Once the engine was out, we supported the back of the gearbox (lazily) by twitching fencing wire around the underbody frame and the tailshaft. Will try to remember to post a picture of it tomorrow. Probably a better way, but this worked for us, even though we rolled it up and down the drive a few times, without any hassle.

Anyone know where to get pre-fabricated exhaust components?

Today we basically drove around picking up the pieces we think we'll need for the swap. The engine as of this evening is waiting on the train for someone to offload it in the morning....

We think we have everything for the swap, the only thing we can't sort out is the exhaust. Preferably we can get a prefabricated downpipe to bolt right onto the manifold and then up to the rest of the existing system. We called around, phoned and visited Midas. They have a supplier that can fab a sports system, but I might as well go to any of the other exhausts places around if they need to make something from scratch.

I've been souring the net for a supplier, but can't find one yet. Does anyone know of a company or place in Oz that sells these components off the shelf?

According to ToyoDIY.com it seems the 3B and 13B-T use the same exhaust? Could I really possibly be this lucky...?

It was certainly a tough effort to push the beer to the bottom of the days agenda I can tell you that! Especially being that at this time of year I'm usually on the beach in a semi-conscious state soaking up the sunshine.

Being that we're still waiting for the new engine that's still stuck in the rail freight yard, we voted unanimously to make up for yesterday by giving the home-brew kegs a work-out....

done yet

You will love the 13bt I have one in my bj74 and the difference between a stock 3b and it is like nite and day. Gotta love raddelaide in summer spent last xmas there in my granparents in law back yard in a camper trailer I think the turkey was cooler.

OK the 13B-T is good however this is a better 3B to 13B-T recipee.

Add $$$$$$$$$$ to the 13B-T ingredients to make the 13B-T Cake ICING :)

Ingredients
  • 14B-T fuel pump - Modified :)
  • SUPRA CT26 Turbo
  • Dial up the BOOST 21PSI is nice
  • Add external Wastegate
  • Add Intercooler front mount
  • 3" Exhaust
  • Stir and slowly fit
Drive and enjoy :)

You will certainly enjoy the 13B-T. It is one of a few Toyota diesels that is actually capable of making your Cruiser "accelerate" instead of "slowly gather momentum.":) Just remember beer, food , maybe more beer than work.:)

Ask Hulsty on here about his 13BT with Gturbo. A CT26 based turbo built by Graeme in Perth. Supra turbos are pants and external wastegates aren't needed on diesels.

13BT is a great engine, I have one in my BJ42 in place of the 3B and also in my BJ74.

I have to ask though :

Today's lessons:idea::

we tried using the Tirfor anchored on the ground, but: that DOUBLES the load. $400Kg load pulling from the ground (through a pulley) a 400Kg engine = 800kg load on the overhead beam = Cracking noises from the single beam we had initially!

How do you figure that ? Using a double line pull halves the lifting effort / force BUT you can't double your lifting weight as 400kg is 400kg unless you have static load which can't move in which case using a double line will allow you to load the anchor but in your case it shouldn't make it = 800kg ??

Or can you and I am missing something ?

The OP is right. Look at the picture and you have not only line tension lifting the engine, but also 2x line tension pulling the beam towards the ground. It's a double line pull with double the engines weight pulling the garage down.

Funny how German Shepherds the world over love the water blasters, good fun but a PITA if you're trying to get something done.
