I have an annoying rattle in the shift lever for my automatic transmission. I want to tighten up the linkage but can't get the first external cover off. There are two screws, one on either side of the front, but no screws visible on the rear. It appears the rear section is attached underneath somehow. I don't want to pull too hard as the plastic cover is relatively flimsy.

Is there a secret to get the cover off?

Thanks.

Panel on the top rear of the console with Japanese writing on it. Pry it up carefully. Two screws underneath. Been covered here before.
Don't forget the bushings between the shift handle and the transmission. They likely need to be replaced as well.

In FJ62s the control shaft bushings at the bottom of the shift lever wear and the shifter rattles. The BJ74 uses the same bushings so that is most likely the cause. 90385-16008 x2.
