ive seem these birfield eliminator kits. thoughts on them? people are always talking about breaking them and having beefed up units

Aren't those kits built around D-44 stuff?
go with longs. Replacement parts for the BEK's are hard to get as well. You dont need to worry about breaking birfs unless you are driving crazy stupid or with tires LARGER than 33's. Unless you have a front locker.
