What are you guy's tricks when removing a snap ring off the inner axle shaft that is inside the birfield? Mine have been removed so when I did the removal process I didn't have to worry about it. But since i'm going to the junkyard to find some mini truck birfields it will have the snap ring. What are your little tricks? Thanks

Travis

Take the axle home with you, or carry the pipe with ya, before I learned the trick I whupped on some for days with no results.

yeah, keep the inners for some poor minitruck guy, probably worth $40 a pair for stockers.

I've got a piece of pipe with a L welded on it....between that and a solid bumper and a big Vice grip to lock it down, I haven't found an axle yet that won't pop loose.

The junk yards around here let me take the pipe in with me when I explain it is a tool. Otherwise find a correctly sized hole in one of their vehicles (e.g. shock mount hole from the inside of the engine compartment) that is high enough so there is clearance under it. Put the inner axle through it and slam the whole thing down through the hole.

I had to seperate one without the proper tools. The bumper that was on the vehicle was solid and welded to the frame. Pounding the birfield's bearing cage against the bumper made it come right off. Crude, but it worked.

How about using the pipe trick on an iron engine block or cylinder head?

can someone explain the pipe trick step by step? bonus points for diagrams :flipoff2:

Hmmm looks like i'll get some 1.5" iron pipe and string a piece of rope through it so I can carry it around through the junkyard and then use it to get the birfs off the inner axle shafts. Thanks
