Bilstein shock help (1 Viewer)

Picked up a set of the 12 in travel Bilstein 5100's from Summit today, and they look REALLY FRICKING LONG in the tube. If I set em to the approx. place where theyll sit, it seems there is only about 3 in of up travel. Is this right?
I know there are TONS of people running these shocks, so I thought Id try em out. Cant find too much info on the dimensions of them though.

So your saying that the shock body itself is really long?

I run my 12" 5125's with about 3" of uptravel, I think its about perfect for my setup.

Still not sure on your question....

EDIT: They are great shocks BTW, I have been running them for years and have no plans to go to anything else.

a high pressure monotube is going to be longer than a twin-tube shock because of the room required for the divider and the nitrogen charge that sits above it..

That said, how much uptravel does your suspension offer? try not to make the shock your limiting factor.

I'm not going through the marathon thread again right now, but are you running Ford shock towers?

Sorry...Ill clarify a bit.
These are for the REAR axle at this point as Ive not done the front SOA yet.
So it seems that OVER ALL the bils. (because of the long tube) need to be compressed a great deal (to only about 3 in of travel UP) to fit in the location that I want em. This is only the 2nd rig that Ive built, and the first I used Doestch techs where the tube itself was about HALF the size. So it just looked weird like they should NOT be that length.

Not sure that makes sense...
I do plan on extending the bump stops, so I can limit the up travel, I guess that it just looked weird for some reason.
Can you run them WITHOUT the dust boots, or would that be bad?
I hate the boots.

Ed, Ill be running an extended length tower up front either an F150 tower, or I may build my own.

boots just pack dirt, mud, and moisture and keep it in contact with the shock. pitch em.

I have the same shocks with ford towers, set them up at half travel (6") up front , flex the truck and realize that my math is way off. I think 3" is perfect of uptravel. I have to do the work one more time.

Run about 3" up front and rear on my spua 40 as well. With 35s and extended bumpstops to suit it works perfect.
