looking to see what guys have for big big gas tanks , and all that ...

Lets see... 36 gallons X 3.00/gal = 108$ /fill up.

Ouch.

I'm runnig the Aussie 42ish gallon tank from $OR.
Built a 1/4" skid plate for it and it works great on the rocks.
It actually helps as a slider for my rear.

True Doc, but the same price as filling 2x 18 gallon tanks except one less trip to the servo.
The biggest advantage for me is on long trips I can avoid the more expensive servos in the small towns, and aim to fill up in the bigger cities.
Also, makes it more worthwhile finding a servo that is a little cheaper (in my own town).
Another advantage is that even if I only got 500 miles to a tank it's better than running out of fuel in the middle of some long offroad adventure (in Australia 500 miles isn't enough on one tank, in some areas!!).

I have a custom 36 gal in the stock location.

Built yourself or farmed out?

I have considered going with the custom option in the past because SOR no longer carries the Oposite Lock tanks and the MAF ones are kind of pricey. I have wondered if I could pull off a 40gal tank in the stock location would be more cost effective. And then if I farmed it out close enough I wouldnt have to pay shipping.

Here the one I have in mine right now. It't the man a free 38gallon.

I also have the MAF 38 gallon in my FJ62. It's like Mr. FJ60's pic but has another cutout for the fuel sender. For those w/ the SOR 42 gallon, have you tried accessing the tank through the panel in the rear cargo floor? The top of the fuel pump doesn't quite line up w/ the access panel in the MAF tank. So if you need to service the fuel pump, you have to drop the whole tank. Only bad I see in the design...nice lines, tucked pretty good, higher than the former spare tire carrier. I dig filling it up to lock in some cheap gas...even though the mileage suffers a little from all the weight.

Same with mine, 135 litre (36 US gallons). I can get just over 1100 km's on a trip (688 miles).

688 miles divided by 36 gallons = 19.1111 MPG? not too sure I buy that one. I'd be happy to get 15! :)...on the other hand, you are in the land of OZ...do you guys add VB to your gasoline (petrol)?

12H-T Turbo diesel and 5 speed manual. Fuel economy should be higher than that.
I was told when I bought the car that it had a 150 litre tank, but the most that I have been able to fit is just under 135 litres.
My fuel economy between changes on a trip has calculated to nearly 26 mpg (imperial gallons), or just under 22 mpg (US gallons).

There is a fella on the Aussie 4WDMonthly forum that has a Landcruiser Troopy that had a 3F petrol engine. He said that he was lucky if he got 12 mpg (US). He converted his 3 ton troopy to a 12 H-T turbo diesel engine and on his first tank of diesel got 17.5 mpg (US) with nearly all of that around town driving.
