Thanks. Definitely questioning the handling - the more I drive it the more I feel there is a BIG on-road difference between the 275/65/18 vs the 285/65/18. It feels much much heavier. Slider steps and load bars going on Tuesday. Will then live with it for a while before making further changes. Probably the next change would be to ditch the AHC and go to OME set up. Will consider going back to 275 size sometime in the future once I get used to these and see how much time is actually dedicated to needing the extra size.

It's not just width (in fact, I'm betting that's the least of your problems). I think the main issue with the handling is in the unsprung weight. Based on the pics, I am assuming you're running E-load-rated BFG All-Terrains, which will be significantly heavier than your original OEM 275 mm. highway tires. Also, tread pattern and tread depth are probably playing a big role in the changed handling as well.

My $0.02,

I agree - i think it's the weight more than anything. This diameter difference is simply too small to have this prominent of an effect. Unfortunately, BFGs in these sizes only come in E-load. I appreciate that the tread difference between the BFGs and more road-oriented tires is material, but I was more interested in noting for those on the forum who may be interested the difference that the two size BFGs result in, since they are a popular choice for many with 18" wheels who dont want to go with 35"s.

I wonder if going from AHC (with adjustable suspension set at "SPORT") to OME would have an impact on the handling sluggishness on road that I'm having?

The more you build your truck for off-pavement travel the worse it will be on pavement, just the way it is. Ask 1Loudlx how he likes is 35's at 10,000ft.

I went from the stock (non-AHC) suspension to the OME/SDD set-up and it made a HUGE improvement in the handling both on-road and off-road (I'm running BFG A/T 285's).

Are you running a lot fo extra weight (bumpers, winch, drawers, etc?). Hard to say how a relatively non-built AHC versino in "sport" mode would compare with OME set up. All accounts are very positive from non-AHC to OME.

Understood - it's finding the balance that's tricky, since mods are generally not cheap. In this case, the BFGs in 275/65/18 feel VERY different than the 285s. This is important since on paper they dont seem that different. Worth asking yourself what the priorities are (off-road, on-road, lift/no-lift, looks, etc) in deciding. I didn't think the size difference would translate to this amount of handling difference. Again, I've had BFGs on lifted (OME) and non-lifted LCs, so it's not a matter of being surprised by going to an AT tire.

Not yet, but I'm running the softer/shorter OME springs (865) and the t-bars can definitely take more weight in the front. My rig definitely handles better now with the OME suspension and 285's than it did even with the stock suspension and the stock Michelin's. I didn't have the stock Michelin's very long, but they always sort of felt like I left for work in my house slippers... comfortable? yes, appropriate? no.

I expect AHC in "sport" mode probably handles somewhat better unloaded than my truck did unloaded with the stock suspension.

Are you talking about handling around corners or responsiveness straight ahead? I didn't notice a big difference when I went from the stock tires to my current Toyo's, but I did it at 5K too so I really didn't have a lot of time with the stocker's. My E rated tires are definitely a harsher ride though.

Of course in "sport" it will handle better all around. Less lean around corners and squat under acceleration.

Improved corning, less body roll and far more composed over rough surfaces... certainly acceleration and deceleration are going to be affected on some level by a larger / heavier tire, but not enough to be a concern.

Damn, I see where this is going... the wallet's gonna have to come out again...
