so, picture a powder coated bumper a la ARB or Kaymar. Nice shiny, glossy black "paint". Now, if one would want to fix some rust, scrapes etc. What's the best way to do that? just sand, blend in the edges and then cover up with what? just glossy black paint and then polish? better ways to do that? things to avoid?
getting ready to do some bumper work... :)

When i did mine i actually used flat black on my ARB for the same thing - to touch up some minor rust where it had rubbed and exposed some metal.

The powder coat is somewhere in between flat and glossy.

Krylon semi-flat matches the ARB stuff very closely. I just use polishing compound and wax, shines it right up. ... NOT, Just beat it on more rocks!:D

it's for the Kaymar actually, but seems fairly similar to the ARB, maybe a tad glossier.
So, what did you do to blend it in?

If I were to to do it, I would use a technique called back taping. Fold about a 1/4" of the masking over on it's self so that the adhesive is up, mask the area with the folded side towards the damage, then fold the tape back over, but leave it sticking up about 30 degrees (see pic). If it's just a small spot, you can just rip, tear, cut a hole about the size/shape of the damaged spot in a sheet of paper, hold it about 1/4" from the surface and spray through the hole.

If you mask to the surface, the paint will have a hard line, bump at the edge. By using one of these techniques, the line will be much softer and my not need any or much less blending.

For my big ol' POS ARB bumper, after each wheeling trip it gets careful detailing. Here is a pic to show off my handy work!:o:hillbilly:

I know powders do come in flat, satin, and gloss, if that helps with touch up sheens.
