Hey Gang, I am looking to purchase a rooftop tent for my FJ62 for some camping trips, possibly PA to Maine, or even heading out west. What are the best tents, and where can I get them the cheapest? I saw that Cabelas is selling an ARB Rooftop tent for about $1300. Also would I need a completely new roofrack? Thanks for any help in advance!

The roof top tent is an awesome idea. I have been looking at this one:
Pinnacle Wholesalers

I'm not associated with this product in any way. I just think this is a good tent at a great price. The site says its the same as the arb one.
Cheers.

Check out the Camping and Expedition section, they have a number of threads about RTT.

I have a Camping Lab w/ awning and it works very well for a great price.

Good luck.

This past weekend I slept in a RTT from these guys and it was awesome. Incredibly comfortable. I emailed them to see if I could buy one of the mattresses for my 60's interior sleeping system I liked it so much.

I have a hannibal RTT. I have had it for about five years. I have found that it is prone to zipper failure and Hannibal support is basically non-existant. It has always kept me dry and I love sleeping up there, but I would not buy one again. I think EZ awn might be better. ARB is supposed to be nice too. --Winslow

I have a Mobassa 2nd generation that works good for me, the wife and three kids.

Wow, I've been looking for a big enough RTT for my family (wife and two kids) and I'm worried the largest of the "flip-open" RTTs is way to small, besides making the 60 look like it could take off if it would go any faster than 70mph due to the overhang.

For size reference, here is my Second generation Mobassa on my tow rig with an 8' utility bed (in Moab)

My three kids are Beagles :D but we still have way more room than we need. Look at the one Bull has in the for sale section. It is on a Troopy and is huge when flipped out.

The bottom one is DieselCruiserHeads ARB on his M101 military trailer. I think this is the same one Bull is selling. You can see from the picture how it folds up and when collapsed it is not much wider than the trailer.

I can see how a RTT would be handy in places where there are dangerous predators roaming about at night as in Africa. I have slept on my roof rack with a futon in the open in the Mohave of CA, not wanting a night visit from crawlies.

Nowadays I am more concerned with highway speed and beating my old 2F up steep mountain grades at least in 3rd gear. So, rather than a RTT I was considering a USAF surplus J-47 GE engine mounted on the roof rack. They are old enough to be affordable and I have a neighbor who is a retired ground crew mechanic from the 1960s.

What do you think? Is it worth it?

I see you're SOA. Does having the tent up there make the truck any more tippy than it was before?
