I've been doing the 60/62 thing for a long time. I've been giving some thoughts to moving to an Lx470 and I'm interested in thinking regarding models. I've got a 90 Fj62 which which is lifted OME, ARB and a number of other improvements. Not seeing any harsh off road in the future so I'm thinking about upgrading to 470. Any thoughts?

Either one of the 2 100s would be a nice upgrade but the 470 does have a few little things that , in my opinion, make it just a tad preferable.. Get one with the 5 speed auto though promise its worth it..

Probably should have been clearer. I was actually wondering about best years for the 470. I think it offers a bit more for sometimes less money than an LC from what I have seen. I think the Land Cruiser name has something to do with it.

I think it depends where you are cause around here the 470 still brings a little more.. but I do see more LCs than 470s though. I want to say 04 was 1st year of 5 speed..

Since I am in the Pittsburgh area I will probably go elsewhere. Someplace where rust is not the enemy. I also gather than traction engineering changed from lockers/part time 4wd to all wheel. I think that the gadgetry stuff like the Mark Levin stereo and night vision are just that, gingerbread. The variable height suspension may interfere with doing a decent lift of any type. Tried to do a bit of review. I think that performance oriented changes are the most important. What does the five speed bring to the table?

2003 was the first year for the 5sp. I think 2004 was the last year the 100 was manufactured at Araco proper. Being built there holds sway for some, but wherever the post Araco 100/200's are wrenched are doing just fine. 2004 is also I think the first year for Bluetooth.
If so, 2004 would be my vote if not wanting to spend 30k+ for a 2006/7.

Outsourcing is a sore spot for me. Nikon outsourced the construction of their mid range dslr cameras to Thailand. I was not impressed. My D3s and D800 were built in Japan. You have made a good point and one I will keep in mind.

I recently picked up an '07 LX470 based on what I read in slee's faq. Having lived with the 4 speed in my 80 series, going for the 5 was a no brainer. I also wanted bluetooth, and LED tail lights are pretty. It's minor, but having the cruise remember your set speed even after stopping and resuming is a feature I got very used to in my Audi. Slee says that was only added in '06.

LX's are few and far between in Canada (45 sold in 2007), LC's even fewer (imported from US only), so when I found this one locally sold and owned, it was a no brainer.

Iceman,
Just to make clear, the ones not made at Araco are still made in Japan. I agree about preferring things made in Japan and it also applies to my AV equipment. Depressing how expensive items still made there are...

There are some great after market led kits for this equipment. My taillights, turn signals and markers are all led. Why do you feel the five speed is better than the four? What was different? Have speed control in a 2012 F250 and I never remember to use it.

I live and breathe cruise control - lots of long distance highway drives punctuated by stop signs. I'm also pretty obsessive over traffic efficiency and it bugs me when people can't properly modulate the throttle. Steady, consistent speed is faster and more efficient than gas-coast-gas, etc.

I know I could have bought a non-LED 100 and changed out the lights, but I didn't. It certainly wasn't the deciding factor, just a nice bonus.

The five speed provides more options around town to keep the truck in (or out) of the powerband, and has much smoother shifts than the four in my 80-series. That's my experience anyways. My 6-speed auto Audi spoiled me for the last six years. It's awesome to be able to cruise around town and never go over 2000rpm.

I'd say at least go for a truck with some sort of Vehicle Skid Control, which was introduced mid year 1999 or year model 2000. Also, Trac and ATRAC are nice features. If you can get the five speed, it's nice. My 4-speed is a pig accelerating and stopping, but drives smooth. The only feature that I regularly use that is exclusive to the LX is the AHC, mainly to just make it easier to get kids in and out. And the memory seat/mirrors, if that's an LX470 only option.

I have driven across Canada and I can see how cruise would be nice. It was a barebones VW microbus and I was lucky it had doors. I have used my cruise in the F250 and the Explorer on trips. I don't have it in the 1990 FJ62. I see the point about the trans.

Set a budget for yourself, stick to it and buy the best one you can find. That's what I did and I ended up with a '06. Relatively low mileage but needed a bit of baselining. Couldn't be happier.

Iceman best way would be for you to drive a 100 with a 4 speed then one with a 5 speed for you to feel the difference. When I implied to try for one with a 5 speed, it wasn't because I thought the 4 speed was a bad choice, but because I think the 5 speed just feels better. The ATRAC is also a nice feature plus the truck being in full time AWD is awesome on the snow and rain. Good luck on the search. When I got mine It didn't take long to realize value on these particular trucks holds more with mileage and maintenance records than simply year..

I knew I wanted an '06/'07 LC/LX, and figured I'd have to go to the states and import one. I started watching Ebay, mud and local classifieds and tracked price, year and kms. I used that to create an approximate kms/price curve. I used that to determine value. The truck I bought was under the curve :)

That's pretty cool. I used my seat-of-the-pants approach. Luckily I ended up with one under the curve too. An import vehicle in Toronto. Actually the first one I found. I paid $28500 and it had 63k miles. That's 1.5 years ago.

I'm confused. My 98 100 has cruise - I use it every day. Why would a newer one be any different? 4 speed, 5 speed? My 4 speed transmission shifts so smoothly you don't even notice, even when hammering the accelerator. Maybe it hunts more in the hills but I've never noticed.
