Howdy! My old Magellan died a while back, and now I am in the market for a new GPS. I'm looking for something that I can use as both a handheld unit while I am on foot, and also something I can use in my rig. I would prefer being able to use 12v power, and maybe a remote antenna setup to keep it working well. My old one was a little iffy when it was laying on the dash. I really don't care whether it has street maps or not. TIA John

I use the Delorme Pn-20 and topo 8 mapping as it comes as a package deal unlike Garmin where to have to purchase software separately.

I have a Delorme PN-40 that is awesome for hiking. The screen is too small (I think) for in car use. Reports are that the street function isn't that good either. However the reception of newer models is far better than what you might be used to, so don't sweat an external antenna. I still find that there is no one-size-fits-all GPS. For strictly in-car off-roading, I use an old laptop with a USB puck antenna and USAPhotomaps (free!) and an inverter for power to the laptop. For city navigation I have a TomTom, and for hiking, the Delorme. There will be serious compromises somewhere if you try and get one for all uses.

I have 2 Garmins, an old eTrex legend that I rarely use (too small, not upgradeable and no color), and a GPSmap 60cs. I like the GPSmap as it's color, is updateable via USB, you can plug in a remote antenna and a 12v power adapter. RAM mount makes a sweet mount for it too. It doesn't talk  but it does notify you for upcoming turns etc. The new one (60csx) has a memory card slot. That would be nice. If I could ask for one thing with the Garmin, I'd like a much faster processor as sometimes I can over drive the turn notifications.
