So we're getting a dog sometime here, my son is 4-1/2 and hopefully we will have another child at some point. I want a dog that is good around kids, mild mannored, etc. (I realize most dogs are, but my mom has a Shiba Inu, that dog is the devil, it will bite you for just petting it if it's done with wanting to be petted, just a horrible mean snappy dog)

Dogs I've seen and had personal experience with that were great kid/family dogs:

standard poodle (would never own one, but my mom has one, good/stupid dog)
golden retriever (my sister has one, seems to be a great dog)
german shepherd (my brother has one, extremely good dog)
australian cattle dog (friend had one, fun to watch, well mannored)
random mutts (growing up we never had a pure-breed dog, just whatever was free at the drugstore, all our dogs were always pretty good, I've heard that there is actually proof of that, how the inbreeding that goes along with a pure breed can sometimes affect the dog's aggressiveness and such, so mixed breeds (mutts) are often times better behaved)

Any suggestions?

Edit: NOT a fan of Labs of any color, friends have had them and just annoying, chewing stupid dogs IMO.

black lab

alway a great family dog

now if you want a good laugh, get you a boxer or two. :D

Get a Pit Bull. I hear they are great family pets.

Bearded collie

Beerman you drank your bathwater this morning didnt you?

Here is my Beardie (Tibby), he is great with kids, surrounded by kids all day, from 8-months to 11 years, He has so much patience, not an aggressive bone in his body.
Great breed for kids but not home protection.

Not sure if I linked up the thread correctly. I started that poll a while back and got tons of responses. We finally got a 4 year old golden female. From a breeder for free( i know, i know - not a rescue) But she was unable to get pregnant, so destined to spend the rest of her days in the kennel. Breeder was just happy that she went to a good home. She is 80% trained and unbelievable with any kids. Terrible watchdog. Can hang for a 4 mile run. Loves riding in the 80. Good luck. And many thanks to everyone who contributes to these threads!

I have a 10 month old daughter and a Golden Retriever....Best dog ever, she just sits there as my baby pulls her tail, tongue, ears....If she gets annoyed she goes upstairs. The golden has become very protective of the baby around other dogs.

We have a Border Collie mix of some sort. She is really great with young kids. They sit on her, chase her and have a lot of fun. She doesn't like the water, but will swim with the boys anyway, never letting them get too far. We couldn't have asked for a better dog for our family.

She is a great heard dog. She will try to heard a pack of kids (IE: birthday party or sledding in the winter). Our newest dog is something mixed with something else and something else mixed in. He seems to be just like our other dog, since he is growing up with her.

PICS

Both were free.

Wow, beautiful dog! Leaning towards golden retriever at the moment, just seem to be very good looking and good manored dogs.

Goldens are great. They are fun, benign, and dumb as a box of rocks. They tend to be recyclers. But they get hip dysplasia freqently and don't last long.

Just make sure you get a dog that will match your lifestyle. I am an avid hunter, fisherman, and hiker. I needed a dog that will fit those activities. Labs are a perfect match for me.

Too bad you say you don't want labs... A mistake in my opinion. There is a reason they are used as blind/guide dogs. They are anything but stupid. You might not like the retriever then if you can't deal with chewing. It also sounds a little like you just don't want to deal with training a dog.

You might also go ask your local vet. Go to the local shelters/breeders and other places. Find one that "calls" to you. Many times the doggies pick the "owners."

If all else fails, then, like Beerman says, get a pit bull.

I love Boykins

Very special dogs. Great with children.
40 lbs or so. Chocolate brown with wavy coat and green eyes.
Hard to find but worth the effort. Bigger than a Cocker but smaller than a Brittany. Retriever.
Scout, my 2nd Boykin is now 13 years young and a joy
to own/hunt.
Pictures and stuff.

If I wasn't a hunter, I would get a border collie in a second.
