We always hit Maurice's to and from the beach. Get a Big Joe. Nothing fancy. Just a big ol pulled
pork sammy. Sweet tea ain't too bad.

lunch

Lunch in 5 points. Andy's Deli Astronaut. Turkey/ham on sub roll and dip that sucker in
special sauce (1000 Island dressing). Nothing fancy. No Name Deli....(drool)...steamed
sammies.....ummmmmm....it's downtown.
Sometimes we go through Cola just to load up some Andy's astos for home. Put 'em on ice.

Wheeler Hill area has a very nice restaurant De Frodas or some thing like that.
Ate there recently. Excellent.

By far the best no BS BBQ I found in Columbia.

Big T's BBQ
2520 Congaree Road, 383-0488
7535 C Garners Ferry Road, 776-7132
1061 Sparkleberry Lane, 788-4295

Not really downtown but good none the less.

In the mid 90s WinnDixie said Maurice's bbq sauce makes you racist. That's why they wouldn't carry it on their shelves. That's also why they're kaput.

We can't find his sauce anywhere due to the confederate flag on the bottle.
We stock up when passing by. I get panicky when I'm down to one bottle.
Just used some last night on some pork tenderloin KeeBobs. ummmmm...good!

would not go to Maurices again if you paid my ticket....last time I went the food was cold and of course their onion rings are not the same as the Bessinger family rings in Charleston area...no comparison.

other than name....I dont associate Maurices with any of the others. I would find some other place personally in Columbia. grew up eating Bessinger family bbq in Charleston and never liked the Columbia version. Like it less now that a Bessinger is in our club down here. I would go to BIG T's as well up in that area.....

Is the sauce atleast the same between the 2 Brock? If so I might just pick up some of the sauce to use on my own at the house.

I need to check out that Manning joint too. I love vinegar based red pepper sauce as much as I love that golden Bessingers stuff.

Had to go check out Andy's today. I got the special and my buddy got the Astro. Nothing fancy, but a decent sammy. Fresh meat though. I have been spoiled with Dagwoods down in Myrtle Beach my whole life, so nothing really seems to compare.

Are you talking about Mrs. Brown's in Kingstree? Their vinegar sauce is by far the best....brings a tear to your eye too!

I grew up eating BBQ from Brown's in Kingstree. My mom grew up there. Either ate Browns or My grandfathers almost every time we went there. Love the vinegar/ pepper BBQ!!

You guys are nuckin futs. Against my better judgement I wanted to see what all the fuss was over Maurices. So tonight I pulled into the Piggie Park near my house and ordered up a Big Joe basket.

Was the worst bbq I have ever had. I could hardly swallow it it was so dry. The hushpuppies were absolutely gross, and I didn't want to try the slaw because it smelled terrible. The sauce was pretty good, but I have to give credit to Big Joe for that, not Maurice.

I like McCabes in west Manning....old blue haired ladies but their bbq is outstanding I think. It was first vinegar based I ever liked actually...
