I posted this on the nor cal board as well , I looking to go to DV with the fam 4-13 - 4-16
Im trying to figure out the best area to camp and some of the things to see with my 5 yrd daughter.
Im pretty sure I will be taking the tent trailer so miles of washboard are kinda out.

Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks,
ken

We always like camping at Stovepipe Wells, they just made some serious improvements and it is centrally located. You can drive up to Scotty's Castle, down to Furnace Creek, or pretty much anywhere within reason of the park. Plus right across the road is a great hiking opportunity (Marble Canyon I think).

I replied to your other post but here are some pictures.

Easter Sunrise 2005 from the same spot

Our old Travel Trailer in the camp ground, It's not really set up for larger rigs but we squeezed ours in.

This is along West Side Road.

When we came through a year ago there was a serious stench all around Stovepipe, but I guess a single septic tank with a bacteria imbalance can do that...excellent spot for a sunset though!

Thanks guys ! great pics Rusty, I was kinda eyballing that campground. as much as I hate to stay in a campground its not sounding too bad....

What would you say the top 5 things to see/do (in order) would be for a guy in my situation?

Thanks again!

Titus Canyon is open for a good day trip.

In fact, you could go to Rhyolite and back through Titus.

The Charcoal Kilns at Wildrose would be another day trip.

If you haven't done the tourist thing in DV and are staying at Mesquite Springs I would say
#1 - Scotty's Castle. This is really just a couple of hours, we usually combine it with an afternoon trip to Ubehebe and the race track. Check the tour schedule in advance so you can plan.
#2A - Drive down to Bad Water taking in all the side loops and stopping to read the informational signage. Your timing is good so there should be plenty of good wild flowers photo op's.
#2B - Take the trip to Beatty and Rhyolite then back through Titus Canyon. This is much less touristy with lots of stunning sceanery.
#3 - The Charcoal kilns, Wildrose canyon and Mahogany flats. Since the road to Mahogany flats is closed I'd save this for another time. It makes a nice day trip from Panamint Valley.

Here are some more pictures;

From your place the shortest route would be through Big Pine. I've only driven sections of the road, not the whole thing, but what I did was either two lane blacktop or high quality gravel. Last year the folks who did the Lippencott mine road went home that way maybe they can give you some feedback.

Look at the map

Yes...the road out of Big Pine (Death Valley Road) and all the way past Crankshaft Junction and on to Scotty's Castle is a good road; and very scenic. Just like your heading to Eureka Dunes only stay on DVR.

Back !! Great trip , kinda windy but good.
Thanks again for all the help , I will throw some pics up after I get the 5# of dust out of my eyes...
