I have read through the faq and have yet to answer my question. My 3 speed in my 73 fj 40 on 37s shutters when I am letting out the clutch. I am going to be pulling my tranny and t-case this week to address issues with the t-case but if it is my clutch that is causing the shutter what is the best clutch to get? I know i can get the 3 finger sachs clutch from a buddy for $190 but is there a better clutch out there for it?

The later style diaphragm clutch is actually a better product. However, along with it, you need to change the flywheel and throwout bearing, etc.

SOR has the complete kit for approx $350.

The shudder is caused by the too tall gearing w/ a 3speed and 37" tars.

If the gearing was shorter, then there would be much less clutch slipping when starting off.

FWiw, an SM420 transmission is an easy swap into a 3speed truck. Gives the same top 3 gears, but with an added granny gear to get those big tires rolling away from a stop sign.

I used the finger clutch from spector and it works perfect. i think everybody han an opinion about the clutch but just replace it with the same set up and you will be fine.

Does the SM420 need an adapter? Ive got a chevy 327 with the stock 3 spd tranny. Like to have the SM420 though.

I doubt you'd use 1st. gear of an SM420 on the highway, even with 37" tires. BTW, I still have my one-and-only HD 3 spd. 3 finger clutch (pressure plate and disc, new in the box, closer to 2,000 lb. clamp load compared to 1200-1400 lb. stock clutch), PM me if you need a bargin basement price on this puppy.
