Bender HAMOM Investigation Thread

Goes back to what do you want to do....learn to bend tube, put some sliders on your truck cheaply, or both? Seems like the trail gear options are a very affordable deal and you can modify them however you like to fit your needs. But if the goal of this whole project is to learn/teach people to bend, notch and weld steel, then buying straight tube and starting from scratch is the ticket.

My vision for this HAMOM was to be able to tackle the tubing projects that you have wanted to do, but haven't gotten around to. From my personal experience, those trail-gear sliders are perfect for a 60, mini-truck, etc. For the amount of work it would take to make them, they're a good deal. However, the hardest part was getting them on the truck. That took planning and trial and error, which would be easier if you were doing more than one truck. Good assembly line work.

I would still like to build several different things with this HAMOM, depending on who needs what. Rick's kick-outs should be rather easy to bend. A bumper for the 60, harder.

It depends on the number of people who sign up and what they want to do. If everyone needs sliders, we can do a slider-a-thon, but I'd like to keep it open for now.

I was thinking again, scary I know.

When building bumpers, generally they are bolted to the frame, most often using the many available holes already in the frame. If the guys wanting to build bumpers have the basic frame mount sections already made at home and ready to go this would save a ton of time. If needing holes at the HAMON, a drill press is something you will want around. Anyone can make these parts from plate with a 4" grinder and a drill.

I generally incorporate recovery shackle mounts right into the plate steel that bolts to the frame horn.

Are you guys using a club bender? Is it a JD2 or similar? Is it manual?

For less than $200.00 the JD2 or simialr can be converted to air/hydro. A kit from Copperhead fab for $89.00 and the air /hydro cylinder from Harbor Freight for $99.00 and you are there. Perterson's 4WD magazine always has 20% of coupons for Harbor Freight.

The air/hydro will make things much smoother. I have been using that setup on my bender for 3 years with no issues. What can I tell you, I am getting old :)

I should have pointed out that with all the people wanting to make sliders, bumpers, and other parts that we are going to run out of time quickly - hence the idea to get some additional pre-made parts. Bending and notching tube is not a cake walk and I want to try and keep anyone from being disappointed that they didn't get their part(s) made. We will only have 1 bender on site as far as I know, maybe 1 notcher, and I'm not sure about welders (both the machines and people).

I hope to be there and won't be building anything for my rig - I'll only be helping. I would love a little pair of mini-sliders for the rear quarters for my Pig but I'll deal with that later and help at the HAMOM. I've never bent tube before but I've notched by hand and also can tack pieces together and will weld for the brave.

not gonna make anything at this time but hope to come out and learn if schedule permits.

yeah, sorry, i should have said the same thing when i mentioned the TG gussets. I'll be there to help.

Maybe i'm just a :princess: but the last time i cranked down on the tube bender at Marshalls, it'll wear you out quickly.

Steve, let me know about the mini sliders, its something i want to do this winter along with your front axle rebuild.

No worries - and if the pipe bender tires you out easily I'll be kaput in no time!

My mini sliders are gonna be hella simple. 2x2" run from the rear bumper then turn a 90 into the frame and bolt to the frame with two pre-existing holes and might add a third hole. 1 piece of tube on each side for good measure and call it done.

Depending on when, I would lilke to come and help. I have a hydraulic bender and and a welder, along with some fab skills, So I will make mine at home, (sliders, bumpers, and winch mount) but I would be willing to help you guys with yours.

Still working on this one, guys. Been on vacation and work has been kicking my @$$ lately.

Based on the feedback so far, I think it would probably be best to make this a basic bender tutorial with the ability for all to bend up some mini sliders. This will keep the day simple and give everyone the ability to use the bender. You can always borrow the bender from the club should you want to do more bending.

I'm working on finding a place to do this right now. Working on some other bonuses as well. Still looking at something post new year.
