OK, so I know I need the FSMs. But every time I go to buy them, I buy a part instead. Next month I swear....

Could somebody with the manual list the suggested belt tension specs for a 10/85 FJ60? I know I can set them by feel (I've searched the threads), but I'd say my feel is not too good, based on the state my last alternator's bearings were in. And I just got a tension gauge that looks like it might be worth something.

I got a reman OEM alternator, reman OEM regulator, and new OEM belts, so I'm trying to do this the best I can. Without the manual, that is.

Thanks for any help.

Borroughs belt tension gauge No BT-33-73F

used belt: 60-80 lbs

Others

I never new there was actually a guage to test belt tension I always, just put them on make them tight but not to tight then go for it. Is this bad, is proper tension a must?

Thanks lovetoski. I appreciate the help.

HntWhtTail, you're probably doing it fine. Not too tight, not too loose. Deflection should be about 1/4 inch.

I was working with an old belt, and then my alternator bearings went, and I got paranoid that I got it too tight.

I found a cheap tension gauge at NAPA, and figured with it and the general 1/4 inch recommendation, I might be closer to right this time.

Check napaonline.com and search for part # KR2.

There's a redone Borroughs gauge available that's probably more accurate, but it's 10 times the cost of the NAPA thing. See dogboy's post from Dec. '05 below.

"Belt Tension Gauge Info...
Info regarding the Borroughs BT-33-73F belt tension gauge as called out in the Toyota FSM as per a technical support rep at SPX/OTC:

Borroughs is no longer in business having been acquired by SPX/OTC many years ago. SPX/OTC stopped producing the BT-33-73F along with others and pulled them from their product line for several years until a slew of recent requests for belt tension gauges prompted them to start production again.

The SPX/OTC 6673 Universal Belt Tension Gauge is the equivalent to the original Borroughs BT-33-73F and is purported to work for all v-belts, ribbed or not, as well as many timing belts.

Just passing the info on for those who might have interest -- take it for what it's worth.
