Books work great, but especially with MIG it's good to have someone there who can show you what sound it should make and what the weld should look like.

Wire speed, amperage and hand speed are the key variables you need to control for the material you're working with. That takes some practice.

A community college is the best place to get guided practice with their materials, but if you can't get that, then a vetran welder should be able to show you the ropes.

Watch out for welding elitists who never belive anything anybody else does is ever good enough. To see this in action, post a pic of a weld you did on Pirate.

Search the net for welding tips online and you'll find hundreds. I made my son do this little class online here before I would let him touch the MillerMatic. He actually had fun and was motivated by wanting to "burn metal". Then when your ready, get some plate and start making rows. When your rows are straight and penetration is right, start 90 degree plates angles. Play with wire speed and voltage to get a good understanding of how things will look and hold.
