When I Steve and I tore my axle apart, I noticed that one of the thrust washers that goes on the outside hub bearing had a pretty severe groove carved out of it.

What would cause this? Bearings too tight? Too loose?

Are you referring to the 1st washer you get to from the outside in? If so, I just yesterday rebuilt my DS hub with new bearings, seal, and races. I had a groove as well. My wheel when I grabbed it at 12 and 6 moved about 1/16th of an inch. So I think it was loose. My bet is loose wheel bearing. Not a big deal to replace all of that and be done with it. However, you may just be able to repack and re-tighten.

Remember as you are turning your first nut on to rotate back and forth the hub assembly. Vince taught me that. Hell come to think of it Vince taught me everything I know about that hub assembly. Thanks Vince!

Oh and since I did not have a new washer available I just flipped mine around and faced that grooved side out. Will replace that soon though.

the groove is very common. alot of the time i just flip it around like Alan said.

if we don't have them in stock you can get wheel bearing nut kits from trail gear. they are the same as mini trucks.

they work for 60's and 80's, and most 40's

Wheel Bearing Nut Kit, 140029-1-K, $9, ON SALE $5

The groves are from being to loose.

Chris

Were there problems? You just rebuilt the knuckles last year!

No, no problems. We had to tear it down when we were doing the pumpkin swap. Noticed the groove then. I'll make them a little tighter this time I suppose. And believe it or not, that axle rebuild was two years ago. Crazy.
